I am currently out with a leg injury and it looks like I wont be able to run again until the new year, just wondering from the experts here how long would it take to build up my fitness levels once I return from injury. The doc says I will out until the middle of january.

I don't think there is a quantifiable answer to your question. Can you do some other cardio like the bike or circuit training to keep yourself ticking over?

No, i've been advised to take a complete break. Long story!

Personally I would not listen to a doctor. There is always something you can do to keep your fitness. Doing zero exercise for 6 months if it is just a problem with your leg seems extreme. No reason why you could not get a workout from a handbike gym equipement or something like that.

In my experience it's usually easier to recover fitness than gain it so you'll probably get close to your current level fairly quickly, maybe 6 weeks after you start back you'll be within 5 - 10% of where you are now. You'll only know when you do it.

Aerobic fitness is only one aspect ...depending on what sort of injury it is, you may well lose quite a bit of muscle strength if you cannot excersise. Especially in the legs. You don't say what sort of level you were at and I suppose it's not overly relevant but it's probably a lot easier for someone who is at a decent level of fitness before the injury than say a beginner or less fit runner., to regain that level again mainly due to experience. The key when you start again will be patience, with the injury recovery and with your fitness levels . Rush it and you risk a relapse or further setbacks. Patience is usually not one of those things that us runners are full of.
