I have put my Octavia through twice with smashed front driver side fog and never mentioned as they are auxiliary lights so unless you get a tester who is very strict it should be fine.

stick a bit of sellotape over the crack...might do the trick

Mine was failed for a loose fog light.

I drove home, tightened it up and retested (visual) same day.

Tape over the crack should do it anyway.

Maybe tape over the other one as well just for symmetry :D

No, they are not checked as part of the NCT

Oh yes they are. They're checked for condition and position (Sect 32 manual) , and for aim (sect 33 manual):
    Front Fog Lamp
1 Incorrectly positioned (see page 53).
    2 Insecurely mounted.
3 Switch defective or does not operate lamp independently of side light.
    4 Not white or yellow

However, a bit of clear tape over the crack should be enough
    NOTES
    1. Where auxiliary lamps are found to be inoperative, this should not be considered a reason for failure.
    2. A broken glass on an auxiliary lamp or fog lamp is not a reason for failure unless the crack or break is large enough to insert a sheet of paper as used in the test.

If a fog lamp is broken it can be failed for sharp edges.

my old fogs had awful corrosion on them, i just covered them over with black duct tape and nothing was mentioned

Yes my mothers car was failed for
3 Switch defective or does not operate lamp independently of side light.
even though it did not have a front fog light, it did however have a switch.
Had to get garage to call NCT to confirm that model had a dummy switch and front fog light an optional accessory.

I think a broken rear fog light lens showing white light could be a fail, as only reversing light should be white. Better to tape over with red tape in this case.
