Had work done on house and something was taken

I had some work done to the house mid August. There would have been a couple of guys here. Although, the work was external they had access to the house.

I live by myself and don't have too much stuff in the house as I'm renovating.

My sister got married at the end of July and the guys in the wedding party were given cufflinks. They were in a small box.

The suits we got were all rented. I made sure that when we were giving them back that I took the cuff links off and put them in the box. Did this for my dad as well. I brought the little box with them back to Dublin and put them on the mantelpiece.

I noticed that a couple of weeks ago that that the box was empty. Thought it was odd but didn't think much of it. Anyway, I was a home last weekend and had a look in the bedroom to see if they were there. They weren't!!!!!

I was 100% they were in the box as I did see them in there a couple of days after the wedding.

Only dawned on me that they could possibly have been taken. I hate to say it but there is no other explanation.

I know it's awful to accuse someone of taking something.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Did they do a good job on the house at least?

I've got several empty cuff link boxes but I wouldn't dream of accusing anybody of taking them. They're easily mislaid.

Were they worth much? Or just costume?

They might turn up yet.. you never know.. Working men making their way into your home just to steal a pair of cufflinks doesn't really sound all that likely to me..

If they were of that nature, they probably would have taken more than just some cufflinks.. that's just my take on it.

I hope they turn up anyway.

What about anyone else that has been in the house since you left box on mantelpiece?

It's a little known fact that construction workers share 97% of their DNA with magpies. This makes them physically unable to resist the lure of pointless shiny pointless objects such as cuff links.

so what we are looking for is builders with a smart appearance and a sense of style, that should narrow it down

I'm trying to link cufflinks to handcuffs but I can't get an appropriate link and wtf is a cuff anyway. Wrist? Is it a wrist? It must be a wrist. But then why would handcuff mean handwrist? OMG answer this one Dawkins!

You need a sting and catch these thief's in the act. Get more work done, leave something else on the mantle piece and set up cameras.

If they go for the bait you have them. Then its just a matter of kidnapping them, torturing them until you get the whereabouts of the cuff links and disposing of the bodies in the cavity of the walls they were constructing.

    What??
A cuff goes around your wrist, makes perfect sense.

The Irish word "gneas" (Irish word for sex, heh..giggiddy)... sounds oddly like the word "Guinness"..

    Anyone ever noticed that?

You went on that rant just so you could use that pun, didn't you? Didn't you? Yes, you did!

The Spanish word for handcuffs (Esposa) is also the Spanish word for wife. :)

I have no idea on the cost. Probably note that expensive but it's not the point. They were a gift from my sister and worn on her wedding day. They would be purely sentimental.

I don't have much in the house. I have two completely empty bedrooms.
I'd have TV, DVD player, 2 radios and DVDs. Other than that, the rest is furniture, clothes and kitchen stuff.

I would love if they did turned up. They would get lost if they weren't in the box but why would I do that!!!!

I remember meeting an Irish carpenter while travelling Australia. He said he was doing a job on a posh house in Malahide one time. And he stole the guys shoes! :pac:

The Japanese words for prisoner and husband are almost identical (shujin vs shuujin)

I'd always keep an eye on the activities of tradesmen if I'm forced to have them in to do work on the pile. It's a shame that one has to tar them all with the same brush, but I've heard many similar stories to the one regaled by the OP.

I'm willing to bet that tradesmen not getting paid by customers after the job is finished is a more frequent occurence.

You'd imagine if he went to the bother of doing a job on posh house he'd steal more than a pair of shoes

My mother was convinced that a family acquaintance had stolen her engagement ring. She never said anything to them about it, but twenty-something years later, my dad opened some old poetry book, only for the ring to fall out of it...
