Would a round file do it I wonder. The chainsaw type.
The hoof paring knife is an unusual shape.

Edit: I see lads on YouTube doing it. Go and take a look.

We have a file here for them, it's flat on one side and semi-circular on the other side. Never used it though haven't had to sharpen the knives yet. There are instructions to ill see if I can grab a photo of them if u want?

It seems to be a top secret with the hoof paring guys-they will take away the knife and edge it for you but never tell you how they do it

I think it should be made clear that if you do have a hole in your bucket, the last thing you should use is straw.

Doubt if a file would put much of an edge on anything , a stone or diamond coated hone would be better, good tool shops sell a selection of them, as do lidl/aldi though these are a bit delicate

If using a file I would use a second cut or finer. You could refine the edge with wet and dry abrasive paper on a flat stick.

Be very careful if using a buffer, they are the most dangerous tool in the shop, they will grab and fling the hoof knife if you lose concentration!

DMT Diafolds would be a good option also, or lansky or Spyderco ceramics...lots of ways to shape steel.
