Ratio of obese men to women in your workplace?

At my job, Im shocked in recent years to see that obesity seems to now be equally divided between the sexes, as men traditionally play more sports than women but if i were to hazard a guess id say that in the office theres 50:50 prevalence of obesity (not just overweight, we are talking 19+ stone) in my workplace. I guess its more reflective of wider Ireland but it cant be the same everywhere. Mate of mine works in a place where practically all the workers are slim and fit so it depends.

Is there a lot of obesity in your workplace and does it result in discrimination against that individual?

Of 100 employees (permanent and contract) about 10 overweight, and 1 obese

    The obese person is male.

None I'd say. One or two overweight but probably the same ration gender wise.

Only one I can see discriminating here is you!!

    ^ Its a mere observation.

Does it count when the men have spindly little legs, no bum and a belly that could contain near term octuplets?

I think there needs to be a big change in education when it comes to diet and exercise, maybe home economics should be compulsory. I think a lot of people are ignorant about what they're putting into their bodies, I know I was before I did some extensive enough research on it. Still binge on unhealthy food every now and then, but overall I eat healthier and feel a lot better as a result. I was never fat, but it almost scares me to think of the muck I used to eat and drink when I was younger. I'd have some sympathy for people who are overweight as a result of their diet in childhood, cutting down on food is hard, and the cravings for certain unhealthy foods is worse than some drugs imo

For my wider team say 20 odd people not one is what id call obese, I wouldn't class any of them as fat either everyone is pretty healthy

From my daily observations I'd say that there's definitely a lot more fat munters around these days.

50% of the women in my current workplace are over weight whereas only 28.5% of the men are overweight.

Not sure. There is a fat woman working in my office but I don't know if she's merely 'fat' or if she's crossed the threshold into 'obese'. I'll have to ask her on Monday...

Yeah my calculations made me come to that same conclusion. If body fat was worth anything we could clear that deficit.

In my workplace obese women outweigh outnumber the men around 70/30. There are three of them who are dangerously overweight, two or three steps/stairs leaves them out of breath and between them they rack up the most sick days each year.

It's not something that I notice, but I believe statistically more Irish men are overweight, while more Irish women are obese.

I would hazard a guess that public sector employees are more prevalent to obesity than the echelons in the private sector.

Where I work, 7 males and 1 sexy secretary. We're all fit, except the boss, he's fat :) Because he has the moola. Big bellies don't come cheap boy :pac:

One woman in the office would be overweight but out on the warehouse floor nobody.

Where I work - 300+ employees - I've noticed a major weight issue in male colleagues in their 30s. In our graduate programme, most (male and female) are of healthy-looking unremarkable physiques. Our grads then spend a couple of years away from the HQ office and return at about age 31-33. The men almost all come back with weight issues - that skinny fat look mostly of large belly and spindly elsewhere. The women rarely change body type so dramaticly. Then in the older women, post-kids age, there would be a tendency for women to carry extra weight at that age onwards.

Of very obviously obese people, I can think of one lady and about 4 men in my workplace.

There are a lot more women in my job than men. Out of a team of 20 I've worked with maybe 6 that have been obsese. It's not really the job for it, quite an active job so you need to be able to move around.

I would have to agree with a previous poster about sick leave, 3 of the obese ladies have used up ALL of their sick leave allocated for five years which in the public sector (I think) is well over a year paid. In both cases these absences were due to injuries not sustained in work but I would imagine related to being overweight or at least not helped by it.

Also both went on to take maternity leave with sick leave either side then when they eventually returned to work made no effort to change eating habits or lose weight. The area I work in you could be on shift for over 50+hrs a week together so you learn quickly why people are overweight by witnessing first hand the crap people eat.

I went to a work related wedding of one girl and it wasn't until I looked around that I realised, excluding our table of fellow workmates, the rest of the wedding party were all either overweight or obsese. I thought it strange that a whole group of friends and family can all struggle with weight issues. It really opened my eyes to the problem Ireland is facing.

I work in a large place majority are sedentary workers ranging in age from graduates to nearing retirement. From people watching I notice a worrying number of young women who are obese - storing up so many future health problems.
A good few expectant looking men too but not as many.

Women are meant to a have a higher body fat %....I wonder if people are accurately adjusting their images of people to account for this?

A man who is *just barely* clinically obese will appear less fat than a woman who is *just barely* clinically obese.
