Just bought a 02 passat TDI ..great car..only a couple of small issues.
The bootlid won't open.. either by the keyfob or the button on-the car.
You can hear the actuator motor trying to unlock it but it never opens.

Second issue is it seems to run cool a lot... it never seems to get to 90deg on the temp guage.
It does have a fan that run's off the belt all the time as oppossed to one that come on an off electronicly .
I m wondering if it might just need a new thermostat?

The fan is mounted on a thermally activated viscous coupling - it only starts working when the engine gets up to temperature.

It sounds like your thermostat has failed open so the coolant is circulating to the radiator from startup and the car is over-cooling. It's not too big a job to do yourself.

As an aside, the temperature gauge on these cars is more like an idiot light than a proper gauge: it'll show 90 *C for actual coolant temperatures anywhere between 85 and 105 *C.

Coolant temp sensor. Common fault on those engines. 40 euro. Easy to replace

Did you try using the key in the boot lock?

Try the key, look under the lip on the boot - had a similar issue, picked up a second lock/actuator in a breakers, easy enough to fit

Theres no place to open it with the key
the actuator makes a sound like its trying to open alright but its not catching yhe lock mechanism

If you can hear the actuator, give the boot lid a decent yank up, it may just be a little bit stubborn

No key barrel next to the registration lights under the lip?

The reg plate surround could be blocking your view but there is a barrel with space for key provided.

If you are tall kneel down and look up...
