anyone know what the crack is here? are you still insured when driving by yourself and will the punishment simply be a fine/points on licence?

would really like to know as I think I'll never get to learn if I'm not allowed drive by myself, I dont get the opportunity to go with a full licencee often enough :(

Before the high horses arrive. Ask your insurer. Some don't cover you when you breach the terms of the permit some do

Once the new RTA is passed it will be one point on your permit and I believe you will only be allowed 6 before a ban.

what happens if you get caught with a learner permit and no accompanied driver?

Its an offence, laws have been tightened up on provisional licenses. If you don't have a full license you can't drive a car without someone who has a full license. If you are caught you could face prosecution. If you have an accident the insurance company is not obliged to pay out. The law is the law.

Slap on the wrist most likely
Worst case brought to court and an average of a €100 fine received. It is illegal obviously but don't act the bollox seems to work for most learners currently.

Will change soon. It'll be like getting caught speeding. But 1 penalty point.

If you have third party are they not obliged to pay out to the third party regardless?

When i got caught i got a slap on the wrist, he was in a good mood and told me to leave quickly, but he told me my insurance is only applied when accompanied with a full licence driver ( driver also must have his full licence for 2 years ) if anything happens the insurance wont pay out a thing, oddly enough when my full test was booked my instructor told me to print it off and drive on my own, he said 90% of them would let you off, im not saying you should do the same tho

You are correct. The insurer will pay any third party claims, regardless if your drunk etc.

Im assuming that would be one point and some fine included?

I think so. Not in yet. Speeding is currently €80 so in around there I'd say. Biggest cost will be insurance if you receive points

That's rubbish. The third party will always be paid (assuming they are in the right).
How on earth can the third party be held responsible for the damage to his own vehicle just because the learner driver had no full driver with him
