What's the best price to offer for this?

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/volvo-s40-1-8-nct-0514-03/5782905

I had a look at the above last week. It is a trade sale from a certain dealer in Kilmainham and is pretty much sold as seen. In pretty tatty condition to be honest and with a cracked front spoiler. It also requires VVT pulley replacement going from the rattle under the cam cover, despite a timing belt/waterpump replacement tippexed as having been done about 5-6k miles ago. There is no service history since 2005 apart from a couple of telltale independent garage stickers around the doors and engine bay.

I know these cars are easy to find and plentiful in supply, but I like the colour, spec and wheels of this one and see potential to make it the car I want. 1250 is the last price for it, but I still think it is too dear.

    What are people's thoughts?

Having seen and inspected the car you would seem to have a more accurate idea of the car than anyone here to be honest so I'd say you would know what to offer for it over any guesses here. It also depends on what the seller is willing to accept for it.

If 1250 is their last price then I can't see them taking any less for it. It's no harm to try though but I can't see them entertaining anything under a grand.

If it was me though Id hold out for a good one. Even if you have to pay a little extra for a better example it would be worth it Imo.

Id be willing to bet that car came as a trade in an realistically stands them next to nothing.

If you're dead set on it. Walk in with 900 cash and say you'll take it as it is now and theyll never hear from you again and that should be it!

    somehow I doubt that.

It was. Traded in against a MkII S40.

That's what I was planning to do. The fact someone else has suggested it now tells I'm not mad. Thanks.

Id be looking to verify that mileage also. Its not excessively low for a 10 year old car, but its low enough that it would make me want to be sure that it is genuine...

    Why?

If it came as a trade in, realistically it costs them nothing so they might be just chancing their arm asking 1250 seeing how it goes. Rather than taking 1000 from a fussy customer who might be back causing headaches later, they should be more than happy to let it go for 900 knowing they'll never see it again.

Just experience of having dealt with these last price dealer types in the past. I know I shouldn't tar them all with the same brush but they all seem to be singing from the same hym sheet.
