Just surfing around and came across this, never heard of it before but it seems that BMW developed a V16 for the E32 back in the late 80's. Had very impressive figures for it's time, but the radiators had to be placed in the back for space reasons (V16 was 30cm longer than the V12) and it wasn't the most elegant solution. 6 speed manual from the 850 was a nice touch though!
The engine design virtually copies the BMW M70 V12 layout but with 4 more cylinders added.
    6651 cc V16 engine
Cast aluminium block and cylinder heads.
    SOHC, 2 valves per cylinder.
Bore and stroke: 84 mm (3.3 in) x 75 mm (3.0 in). Bore spacing: 91 mm (3.6 in).
    Compression ratio: 8.8:1
    Maximum power: 408 hp (304 kW) @ 5200 rpm
    Maximum torque: 637 N·m (470 lb·ft) torque @ 3900 rpm
    Redline: 6000 rpm
Engine Management: 2 separate Bosch DME 3.3 for each bank
    Dry weight: 310 kg (683 lb)[3]

There's a bit more on it here.

Interesting. Mercedes had considered an 8.0 l V16 for the W140 S-Class too but dropped it for being too ostentatious.

Rowan Atkinson had the intended 9 litre v16 in a phantom on top gear iirc.
