    Hi,
I am interested in 2010 VW Passat R Line diesel, 110 BHP, 50k miles, €14k, with service history. Buying from Private seller.

Any opinions on this car? I am looking for reliable 5-6 yrs driving from this car. Typically I would do 15-20k miles/yr

    Thanks

2 litres engine? Run away. The worst VAG engine ever built.

Edit: sorry, my fault - the worst ever was 140BHP 2.0 TDI engine. :o

Nope. Your probably referring to the old 2.0 TDi PD engine which was replaced in 2008. A 2010 Passat would have the newer common rail 2.0 TDi CR engine, which while not 100% without problems it is probably as reliable as most of any modern diesel engines are.

OP, in that year the R-Line was a UK spec model and 50k miles on a 3 year old example is very low so make sure it has a fully verified service history by ringing the garages who stamped it. Like nearly all UK cars it should have a service history, if it missing or if something doesn't add up then walk away, too easy to clock these cars and people who don't do due diligence can get caught. Also €14k for a private sale is crazy money, here is a similar one for a lot less:

Or you might be able to knock something off the price of this one if buying straight which will come with a 1 year warranty from a dealer:

Personally I don't like the R-Line in that model, it's a base model Passat with a few extras and a body kit which imo looks out of place on that model.

    Thanks Baz,

I got the car checked by mechanic, checked history check will cartell. Does not seem issue with mileage. Mechanic told me there is fluid leak in front suspension that needs fixed.

Drove car on motorway. Drives good. Haggled on price and it is now €12.75k. I m thinking of taking a plunge.

Baz- I rang the guy in wexford. It sounded fishy to me. The advert says €11.7k but he imported from UK and vrt is to be paid, which he is not saying in advert.

I Googled about any known issues with R line but did not see much. So either not many on road or not much issue.

Forget about him so, unless he is a registered dealer it is illegal for him to sell a UK reg car here without him VRTing it first. Sounds like he is selling UK cars on the side here and trying to stay below Revenue's radar. If your mechanic is happy to recommend the other car then go with that.

Also you need to google general Passat problems, R-Line is only a spec sold in the UK same as S or SE.

The VRT on that would be €3466. I have a 2010 Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI R LINE 140PS Automatic for the Past 2 Years with only the Parking Brake switch replaced. No Other problems and the Mileage is only 33,207km = 20,633miles

    Great Engine in these.

Would it not be possible that someone would refer to a car in the family as "our" car, I see no reason to disbelieve him. It could be shared, or lives at home, anything really.
