Had exactly the same with a 00 polo. If I can remember rightly it was so etching to do with all the seals, gave it to a friend who is a mechanic in lue of work on another car as would have cost too much in labour to have it resolved.... His wife has been driving the car since then, about five years ago, as he put the work in and got the car through the nct.... Will ask partner when he gets in what exactly the problem was, but definately something to do with major seals gone......

Does the car run ok now?

The camshafts and cam buckets can wear on those engines.

Car runs fine. Drive it 350 + miles a week.

    Doesnt use much oil..
Low idle was .7 then used dipetane and went up..

Smell off the car is strong

Smell of fuel? If so its overfueling which would point me to lambda sensor. That also matches up with a lambda reading of 0.84 on the NCT test. It should be as close to 1 as possible to ensure correct fuelling.

yeah smell of fuel alright, yeah thats what i thought but with it so high... i was doubting it

The car is running very rich indeed, which is why all the other emissions are so out of kilter. If you keep driving it the way it is, you'll burn out the catalytic convertor, so try and get it done asap. It's probably an oxygen/lambda sensor.

Cheers folks. Ill change the lamda and test the emissions. See what its like then

Lambda sensor is one possible culprit, yes. It could also be the MAP or coolant temperature sensors. The presence of a misfire before would have me on the look-out.

On the look-out for issues with those two other sensors, rather than focusing exclusively on the Lambda.
