Nikon D3100 or Canon 1100D for beginner?

I’m a total beginner to photography and I’m having difficulty in choosing between the two. I’m still trying to get my head around the technical jargon for each but from what I can understand video quality is better for the Nikon. Not that it’s not important but I’m more interested in photo quality.

Is one better than the other for photo quality?

    Thanks :)

the difference would be minimal to the point of being unimportant.
best choose on having a heft of each, and choosing whichever feels best in your hand.

You will be really pushed finding difference in image quality between these two bodies.

If it was within my means I would.

IF you can't make up you mind then it doesn't matter which one you go for. As mentioned, pick them both up and see how they feel.

Both great cameras. Best advice would be go to a camera shop and try out both, whichever one "feels right" in your hands is the one to go for!

If you know anyone with either Nikon or canon that you would be comfortable swapping or getting a loan of lenses from, you should go with that one

I would certainly recommend a hands on test. Quality wise, the difference between them is negligible so have a look at them in a shop somewhere and see how it feels. Certainly check the menu system and see which one you find best. Is the menu layout intuitive or do you find it cumbersome and awkward. They are both different. I have been using Nikons for several years and have experience with most of the models but any time someone asks me advice in work I always tell them a hands on test is the best thing to judge by as for a €400 spend, you will get €400 of a camera.
