Milk in small shops

Recently in small shops I have seen less and less branded milk. In truth most milk is Stratroy and I am a long way from the border. In small branded shops (Centra, Spar etc) you see there own brand however in small independent retailers you now mostly see Stratroy. Have the co-op not the cop on to see that the are conceding market share and allowing Stratroy a licience to build market share in these small shops.

I think the rot started over ten years back when supermarket own brand milk first appeared and co-op taught that they could continue to charge 50% more for own brand milk. Is it not time now to recover market share by droping the price of branded milk to at or near own brand price. In reality Branded milk is only a small fraction of the milk market now. They have even lost the pint and litre jugs to own brand. Only in rural Ireland is this size jug not in competition with own brand milk.

I think that co-op will continue to drop market share unless they start to compete against stratroy. Stratroy recently increases there price for this milk by 20c/2L and 30C/3litre jug. That did this because they have no competition.

I under stand why consumers buy it I remember when the co-op put up the price of branded milk in small shops locally 10+ years ago the difference between me getting the supermarket branded milk and bread 2-3 times a week in a supermarket rather than buying locally wasover 10 euro/week I think.:eek::eek: That was over 10 years ago.

I agree totally, one Branded dairy 30klm away and their milk is silly prices around here and to me nothing special. so we buy cheaper stuff. I bought a litre of organic pasteurised non homogenised (yes expensive) milk to try recently and the taste was something else on the cornflakes for breakfast. I miss the proper taste of milk from the tank unadulterated as we don't milk cows anymore

Pricing of milk makes no sense at all, recently bought milk in Athy from a small dairy in west cork for €1.80, Glanbia milk was €2.30 and there bottling plant only a few miles out the road yet there sending truck loads of milk from that plant to cork every day, diesel is not dear enough yet:D

Whats the story with Tesco Milk, it only lasts a day or so in the fridge. Someone told me that they re-pasteurise any unsold milk, is that true??

it's the same as avonmore, and yeah, I'd find the supermilk at least doesnt have a massive shelflife.

I know "back in the day" that milk unsold after a certain time would be collected by some dairies at least and re-processed.

but you'd be talking a churn or two per truck load kind of thing.
