Off-Season Training?

    Hey,

I'm ahead of the possy here as most people are working toward the season climax of the DCM (very jealous) but ITB injury ruined my September so I pulled out of the DCM.

Was going to target a marathon in the first half of 2014, (i.e. start training in December or so). That leaves me with a few months "dead time" before I do that, what should I be doing for the next two months? I want to keep structure but doing a google, I failed to find an answer!

Was toying with signing up to the Clontarf half and following a light enough schedule like Hal Higdon Novice 2 for the half...I could easily pick this up in week 6 as the first 6 weeks are similar to what I have been doing in order to test my ITB.

Any other clever suggestions from the wise heads of boards.ie? What I really want to avoid is wasting the next 2 months doing junk miles when I could be building a stronger marathon base for 2014.

No such thing as "dead time". There are plenty of 24 week plans out there which if you are doing the likes of London/Rotterdam/ Barcelona means that its only a couple of weeks till your start on them

Other than that you could break things down

Why not do a half marathon plan and get ready for Waterford at the start of December. The training here would build strength going into any marathon plan.

The one thing I will say is build your mileage and aerobic base consistent training is what will yield most benefits

(Currently I am in base building phase for Rotterdam myself so in a similar boat)

I remember reading recently that your hardest/heaviest training should be done over the winter. I didn't like that idea too much when I first heard it but its making more sense to me now.

The idea is that you do your hardest training over the winter to hit next season at your fittest. When the next racing season starts you will be maintaining your new higher level of fitness rather than building it as your training will be dictated by racing (peaking, tapering, etc). Thats not to say that racing isnt great training, it is.

This is something I'm beginning to think about as I'm in the same situation as the OP.

Cant find a link to it at the minute but I remember one of the Marathon Talk guys spent the winter focusing on getting his mile time down. When he returned to longer distances in the spring he was rewarded with a huge improvement in times from 10k to marathon.

maybe join a club and get stuck into their weekly sessions...should keep you sharp and motivated over the dark winter evenings.

Kinda in the same boat as the OP. Had planned to build up a base this year but with work and an injured back only getting back into now. I'm planning on training for the Waterford half as a base build and then jump into week 6/7 of a marathon training plan for Barcelona (hopefully).
