    Dell Dimension 2400 XP Home SP1 IE6

I've just reinstalled XP and now Windows Update won't run.
This hasn't happened before on previous reinstalls.
Can anyone tell me what's gone wrong?

Sp1 / ie6 won't update automatically - you need updated bits of windows and I don't remember which ones... I'd start with manual downloads of windows installer (3.something i think), sp3 and ie8.

You're probably getting an error code if you google on that you'll get better info - it's a common problem that affects all re-installs

Good lord, back to SP1? Download and install SP2, let it finish, then download and install SP3. Then download and install IE8.

I would imagine Windows Update won't run because support for XP SP1 ended in 2006. The Windows Installer and Windows Update modules both need substantial upgrades from the versions supplied in SP1 to the almost-certainly-final versions currently in SP3.

You wouldn't need SP2 in order to install SP3, it contains all previous updates.

You might as well slipstream Service Pack 3 into your installation CD and while you're at it, integrate IE8, WMP11 and the latest Winfuture Update Pack (German website but the update pack works for English versions of the operating system) .

It will save you a lot of hassle and diskspace. (who needs a gazillion uninstall information folders and system restore points?)

Well I'm finally back up and running. Whatever went wrong CPU Usage History was running at 100% so everything took ten times as long but it did eventually download an up-to-date copy of AVG, IE and all the various Windows updates.

That slipstream stuff linked above looks good although I haven't gotten my head around all the instructions yet but I'd like to have it on standby for the next time.

So thanks again for all the help.
