NCT on car getting close to 10 years - 1 year or 2 years?

    Hi, I am close to purchasing a 2004 car that needs its NCT renewed in Feb 14, when it will be 10 years old. Will this NCT last 1 or 2 years (isn't it at 10 years old that the car needs annual NCT tests?). If I can get it in early, i.e. before end of 2013, will I get a 2 year cert? Its not really a big issue, just wondering! Still going to buy it regardless

    All cars are due their NCT's on their 4/6/8/10/11/12/13/14/15/16th..... birthday

    youll get one year. Well if you do it 3 months early youll get 15 months

    My car got two years on it's 10th birthday. Made it much easier to sell.

    I got mine done early, maybe that's why. They probably changed the rules so that can't happen any more. A friend got only 1 year recently on his 10 year old car.

    Fair enough. I got two years on my car when I tested it early on its 10th anniversary, but that was a couple of years ago.

    That's why. The rules changed a couple of years ago so that the test is required every year from ten years on.

    No.
    Every car presented for NCT which due date is 10th anniversary of first registration or any subsequent one gets a certifictate for 1 year from that due date.
    It doesn't matter if you present it on time, 3 months before or after due date. Result will be the same...

    People who get 2 years NCT on 10 year old car, must be because they are imports.
    For good few years now (probably about 4) imported cars are due NCT not from date of first reg, but from date of import.
    So. example.
    Car first registered May 2004 abroad. Imported to Ireland in February 2010.
    It must have been NCTed on date of import, and NCT cert was valid until February 2012.
    Then again, next NCT cert valid until February 2014.
    Next due date is in 2014 (so theoretically car is 10 years old), but in fact during NCT due date it's not 10 years, but only 9 years and 9 months old.
    Because of that, it's not 10th anniversary NCT, and they must issued 2 years NCT until February 2016.

    Very strange. My 00C 318i was registered in Ireland in February 2000. I got a 2 year NCT in 2010.

    So according to your logic someone bought my car in the year 2000 and within one month imported it to Ireland and hid all traces of it being imported? Sneaky bugger!

    In February 2010 all cars were getting 2 years NCT.
    1 years validity of NCT for cars 10 years or older were introduced AFAIR in May 2011 (I might be wrong about exact date).

    Brother put his 2003 car through early to get two years instead of one and only got one year.

    He rang them up and queried it and they said he wouldnt get two years. Cue a rant from him about them always banging on about the 'advantages of booking early'.

    I think it was a loophole that they closed.

    There was never any loophole.
    Law is clear about it, and straight away when 1 year validity of NCT for 10 years old cars were introduced in 2011, cars presented for 10th anniversary NCT, even if it was 3 months earlier, were getting only 1 year cert.

    I drive a 03 car, it's been off the road a while and the NCT is out since Jan 2013.

    Putting the car back on the road and went to book the NCT, got a date middle November. Rang NCT querying why so long to get a date but the girl there told me my cert will be valid until Jan 2015 and not Jan 2014 as was expecting.

    Sweet :D
