Missing Labs for Society Trip?

    Hey 'nooth.
Joined Ultimate Frisbee. Absolutely loving it, bests sport ever. Had a tournament in Trinity over the weekend.

Now, next weekend, we have another tournament in Manchester. We're leaving on Friday morning (Oct 18th), and back Sunday.
Trouble is, I have 2 labs on Fridays, CS141(Intro to Programming) and EP101(Experimental Physics), both of which are apparently mandatory and count towards continuous assessment.

How do they deal with this type of situation? Is representing the college in an official sports tournament a legitimate excuse, and I'll be made exempt, or will they dock me the 5% of my grade or whatever it is for the module if I miss them?

I'm just a poor 1st year, I don't know what counts as a proper excuse yet :P I'm in engineering also, if it's relevant.

You can miss a certain amount of labs without technically failing the module (for physics anyway) not sure about comp science.

And not trying to diss the sport or anything but I doubt you'll find many people willing to give you an exemption when you explain what sport you're representing the college in.

If it was me, I would stay and do the labs, there'll be plenty more frisbee tournaments that won't negatively impact your overall grade.

Almost sure CS ran as a best of certain amount of labs. Missing one is by no means the end of the world. Go enjoy yourself. Also, pop into the department admin offices or lecturers and ask them individually. They could be very nice about it

    Thanks lads.

Probably gonna go with Marko93's advice here :P I'll talk to the relevant people tomorrow, try sort something out.

Hey now dojojoe, it's a sport we're actually good at, NUIM should embrace Ultimate!

Back during my first time in first year my chemistry lab was on friday and I was leaving for kayaking varieties that morning too so they let me change it to Thursday easy once I got a letter from the club saying I was going. So if it can be changed I'd do that :)

Go talk to your department and emphasise the fact that you are representing the university. Would not worry about it being Ultimate Frisbee, it is a proper organised intervarsity event so it is the same as anyone representing the university in a competition.

    Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

Just an update, talked to both lab coordinators.
For Physics, he was really nice, said thanks for letting us know, but seeing as it's not a life-or-death hospital appointment (His words), I'm just gonna be marked absent as normal, however not to worry about it because overall it works out to be worth a tiny amount of my overall grade (Something in the region of 1%).

For Computer Science, she said that they get this all the time and it's fine, just to get an official "Sports Form" from the Ultimate Frisbee team. I have no idea what a sports form is, I assume it's some sort of official letter saying I am actually going and not mitching - anyone ever heard of a "Sports Form"? If the ultimate guys don't know what that is, I'll just ask them to write me a letter I guess.

Thanks again - Manchester here I come :)

On the above page there is an Inter-Varsity Representation Confirmation Form, so I presume that is what they require you to fill in.

Please don't bump threads for stupid reasons mossy95. And D_S, telling someone to **** off is considered personal abuse on boards. Please don't do it again.
