    Hi
I'm over in the UK to attend University.
Just wondering if anybody knows of any insurance company in Ireland that insure you abroad for 90+ days and allow you more than one trip as I will be going home every 2 or 3 months and will be home for 3-4 months during the summer so don't want to have import the car.

Every single insurer will have to provide you with third party cover, so you will be road legal without any time limits.
Unfortunately most insurers limit anything extra to third party (like fire, theft, windscreen cover, comprehensive part (own car damage), etc) to anything between 30 and 90 days.

I recall FBD used to advertise they provide unlimited cover in the EU. But I don't know if it's still the case.

So it all depends on the car? If you have some old banger which you wouldn't claim if it was damaged in accident, stolen or burnt, then you don't need to worry at all.
But if you want your insurance to cover your car against fire, theft, damage, etc, then it might not be easy to find insurer providing it.

Yes i did hear about FBD myself but i would be looking for comprehensive cover as its a 2006 VW polo so expensive if something was to happen to it. I'm sure there must be some option as I'm sure the businessmen ect who do a lot of travelling must have something like what I'm looking for.

I just had a look again.
Looks like FBD still offers unlimted cover abroad.
Even if you go to their website, and fill in quick quote details, it shows this:
Cover provided for unlimited no. of days driving in EU

Also their policy booklet seems to confirm it:

    http://www.fbd.ie/media/FBD/pdf/fbd-pmv-policy-book.pdf
    Territorial Limits
In respect of events occurring anywhere within:
    (a) Ireland, Northern Ireland, Great Britain, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands
    (b) Other European Union Member States
    (c) Designated Areas [The Countries that the E.U. Commission is satisfied that
arrangements have been made to meet the requirements of Article 7(2) of the
E.E.C. Directive on insurance of civil liabilities arising from the use of motor
    vehicles (No. 72/166/CEE)]
the full indemnity in force under the Policy as specified under “Cover Operative” on the
    Schedule applies.

So this might be an option for you.

yes that would be kinda the thing I'm looking for
    would that be comprehensive?
I'm in the UK at the moment would I be able to cancel my current policy and take up an FBD policy and would still be covered as my boat ticket would say I enter into the UK before my policy started?
lll be back in Ireland on the 6th of November and then returning to the UK on the 17th/18th of November but my current policy only cover me for 30 day which would mean I'm not insured after the 18th of October as I entered into the UK on the 18th of September

I have no idea. Best way is to ring them and ask them.

Maybe you can try ringing your current insurer if they couldn't extend 30 day to 60 or something.
I remember some time ago, Aviva offered 30 days cover abroad, which could be extended to 90 if needed to extra charge. (I'm not sure if it still works) Worth asking.

Yes I'm with Aviva but through the One Direct Broker the issue I'm not sure of is if they will extend the cover while I'm already abroad?
If they would, it would cover me to November when I come home. While I'm home change the insurance and then I would have the boat ticket showing entry after the date the policy started

You could just live on the edge (i.e. have 3rd Party cover only from Aviva) from 18th October to 6th November.

Yeah but if I had an accident in that time my proof of entry (boat ticket) would show I've been in the UK longer the 30 days I have on my insurance

Have you told them that you're in the UK?

As CiniO said in his first post, your 3rd Party cover cannot be limited time-wise by your insurer. The 30 days only relates to the period for which you have Comprehensive cover.

No the guy who I got the insurance off in the Post Office told me that the cover was automatic

I assume that they have to be told. Otherwise how can they count the 90 days.

If it's automatic, just make sure you're home every 90 days and have the ferry ticket to show it.

Read the thread again. OP currently has only 30 days comp cover.

OP: Read my last post above.
