We're a lucky bunch this year - due to release shenanigans, for the third time in the last twelve months we're gifted a new Hirokazu Koreeda film. Surprised this has been released so quickly (I use 'quickly' as a relative term, since it premiered in Cannes) - certainly rare to see a Japanese film released within six months of its debut.

Anyway, it's out next Friday the 18th. I Wish was a delight, and while this has attracted a few middling reviews, the feedback from others (including Koreeda enthusiasts) has been extremely positive.

So glad we didn't have to wait long. I was expecting it to be shown at JDIFF. I guess I Wish did pretty well for Arrow Films.

It also won the Jury Prize (third best award) at Cannes. Spielberg loved it so much he acquired the remake rights.

This film, little surprise, is a triumph. Kore-eda extracts such warmth and insight from what could easily have been a trite premise that he once again proves himself as something of a miracle worker. With a visual style that probes when needed and stays distant when appropriate, stylistically it is beautiful. The characters are fascinating - one emerging as a de facto protagonist, but plenty time dedicated to letting us get to know the wider ensemble in intimate, varied ways. The result is a heartbreaking drama, where every action and statement could have devastating consequences. All this without stooping to cheap melodrama or sentiment.

As emotionally generous and engaging as cinema gets, really, and another stellar notch on a master's belt. See it while you can, it will inevitably disappear much sooner than later.

Good female cast too, Machiko Ono is a very good actress and has acted with Yoko Maki before.

Where is this being shown? I saw an ad for it on YouTube. Instead of immediately skipping it, the first 5 seconds caught my attention and I was really interested in watching it.

The whole cast is exemplary, including the youngsters. Everyone can hold a scene on their own, but the dynamics when they come together are particularly compelling. Also like how Koreeda keeps the kids at the periphery for a change. The brief glimpses and expressions he captures say everything that needs to be said.

Only IFI at the moment I think. It's apparently doing very well for them, so hopefully a few regional cinemas will pick it up over the coming weeks.
