Ringing HR/Recruitment Managers

I have my CV in for two jobs with two big companies (so no doubt plenty of applications) and one of the places I feel may use an applicant tracking system (so without correct keywords it'll never get to a human).

I have been told that following up on your application with a phone call might be a good move. My question is, is it? Does it make you stand out from the crowd...or will the busy recruitment manager just be annoyed you're hounding them?

From my experience it seems to be beneficial, it shows you'll take the initiative. Just don't ring every day or anything like that.

You will struggle to get them on the phone, HR/Recruitment managers are always receiving cold calls from.agencys & headhunters - so most tell the gate keeper to let no cold calls through

    LinkedIn is your friend here!

danthefan, haha ah yes, only the one call I think

fermanagh_man, that was a thought alright but I guess no harm in trying

brianblaze, can I ask how so? That's probably one of the only things I haven't got an account with. Am in fulltime employment for the past 6 years and only looking for a move recently.

If you're a job seeker, and you don't have a LinkedIn, you are really limiting your opportunities. I work in Digital but I know most Hr managers, recruitment people etc are using linkedin for everything!

Make a good one, get a few connections and then link in with the HR person of your target companies. Be active with stuff they're interested in, and you'll be surprised the difference it makes!

What industry are you looking at?

Jobs are in google and twitter, have more than enough experience for the positions but currently working in the civil service which sometimes I feel is a bit of a black mark

I'd second this. You need a really polished LinkedIn profile. And while you are job searching you should subscribe to the cheapest of the monthly subscription deals....it allows you to email directly people not in your network which you can't do with the basic service.. Just sending a LinkedIn connection request (which is all you can do with the free service) is not enough. You won't get recognized and the message that you can send with an invitation request normally isn't read. You have to send a separate LinkedIn email if you want to get attention, and you have to pay to do that

You need to have a LinkedIn account Yesterday! Start one now, if you need a few connections, message me and I'll gladly linkin with you.

I've liased in some form with both of those companies recently, and have spoken with employees from them in the last few months, and they all have LinkedIn! Digital Role, definitely need it!
