    Hey

Sorry to ask this, but no clue where to go.

I bought a BMW a few months back, its an 01.

Today the engine started stuttering and lack of power getting to it.

Mechanic came out, thought it might be the coil, but its not, he said some BMWs at that time had a coil problem, but the engine in mine wasnt the engine that gave those problems.

he did a diagnostic and it said something about secondary air causing the issue. he is bringing it in to try fix. But he said it could be anywhere between 300 and 900 to fix it.

I think i will just cut my losses and sell for scrap and parts and i was looking for anyones recommendation on where would be the best place to do this.

    Thank you

    Andy

Selling for parts can be done in a couple of ways
One advertising it on Donedeal as it is and list its fault. Someone might buy it to fix it up or use it to repair their own. Should get a few hundred but its a limited market take what you get offered.

Two phone a scrap yard they will buy it and scrap it or part it out themselves. They offer one hundred maybe a little more.

Third is part out the car yourself. Its messy and you'll have to dismantled the car as parts are bought. It will take a long time to sell the most valuable bits. Not ideal if car sitting in front garden.

I would try option one and if no takers phone one of the companies that buy any car.

There is another option fixing it and selling it.

This isnt my car but the exact model, someone is selling on adverts.

Its a 1.9 litre petrol engine.

Other than the engine thingy, its perfect, even has the bloody small portable flashlight thingy they give you. Mechanic also said the engine is a really good one, apparently 2 different engines where used, mine is the good one without the coil problem.

It was NCTd in april, the day i bought it, quiet annoyed :)

Thank you for that, i think option one is the best bet. i could fix and sell it, but it may cost more to fix than id get selling the thing.

I wouldn't decide anything until he comes back with a diagnosis. Get a second opinion too before making any rash decisions. Parting it out would be a bit of a pain unless it's a very good feature spec (i.e. M-sport). Say you sell it for €500 non-working, you've to add another few hundred to that to get a decent car - might work out less out of pocket to get it fixed. It passed NCT, your mechanic says there's a good engine in it so relax

yeah but he also said that it could cost 900 quid. i will now tomorrow but just wanted to see what options are available to me. GRRR, guess an NCT is worthless after all.

Yeah, but why did he say €900 and not €1500? The truth is he hasn't a clue what is wrong with your car, but he'll know tomorrow so wait until then. And then get a second opinion if you think he's having a laugh.

Often times it costs more to sell an old car and buy another that it would to fix a particular problem. There is a limit of course - nobody wants to throw money into a lemon that's going to give them hardship, but you're nowhere near there yet by the sound of it.

yeah maybe im just panicing a little bit. i will of course wait until he tells me what the problem is, its its ludicrous then i will go get a second opinion. Thanks for all the help and advice on this.

Yeah, panicking when something goes wrong is what I do too, you did well to ask on here :) I only wish I asked here before I threw a shedload of money on my Peugeot 206 a few years ago; I should have parted it when it had a value > €100 :D

well as it turns out the car is fooked.

Timing chain slipped, destroyed a few parts,

Cylinder one and four arent firing, etc etc, there was a long list of problems. Apparently the parts themselves arent too expensive, about 800 for everything, a lot of damage apparently, but he said the labour costs would be twice that as the whole thing has to be dismantled, so back to selling it to a breaker yard. can anyone suggets a decent one. The mechanic himself said the car it self is immaculate, leather seats etc, allows, bla bla, so dont let a yard rip me off.

If you're handy with tools, have space and could potentially strip it yourself, I'd be inclined to do that. You could list it on bmw-driver.net for parts, no problemos, then sell the chassis for scrap value.

If it's Msport you'll get even more value doing it that way

Otherwise, Frank Wyse in Cahir has a BMW specific breakers yard.

Id probably end up doing more damage :) thanks for the breakers yard though, much appreciated.
