I registered for VAT in July of this year. Thus my first VAT return was due to be submitted in September. But I was abroad and busy with some real life problems and I never got around to doing it. Should I be worried about this?

Send it in now with whatever payment is outstanding, the revenue may or may not charge you interest on it but there's no point in delaying the inevitable they will look for it eventually, sending it in a few weeks late is better than a few months
