Cleaning metal prior to painting

Looking for some advice as to what to use to clean metal prior to prime and paint.

Metal is mostly box steel, a mix of new and old metal. The new stuff is particular dirty as its covered in protective oil I assume.

Would white spirits do or should I use something else? There's a lot to be cleaned too. Thanks.

Use white spirit to degrease the newer metal, use nylon pot scrubs if necessary, and make sure the rags are wiping off pretty clean before you consider taking a paintbrush to the metal. I've used hot water and detergent to wash down oily metal also, allow to dry off and finish by wiping with a rag soaked in white spirit.
