Hi, applied for the state street graduate programme recently and receieved a phone call today offering me an interview. Anyone know what they are like to work for? and also what are they like in terms of progression, hours, benefits etc. I currently earn 29k in a deadend job and I am being offered 24k so wondering would a switch be beneficial?

I worked for State Street for 4 years. Left recently to move back home.

As for the job, it really depends on the team you are on. Overall I didn't enjoy the job. The hours are long (but you get paid overtime while other companies you don't). From managements point of view, working long hours is part of the job. It's like people prefer being in work than outside of work. Makes no sense. But thats not just State Street. Appears to be the same in all investment banks.

Benefits: you get paid overtime which can come in handy. But can be annoying when you don't work overtime you are down money.

Progression can be slow. You won't get a pay rise unless you get a promotion so this will be about 2 years after you start. Depends on whether someone above you leaves and a position is opened. What I could never get my head around is they pay more to people hired outside the company than they do to people who have received an internal promotion. I know they need to attract talent from outside but they should also reward employees for being loyal.

The main advantage with working with State Street is it looks good on the CV. Working for a large multi national is very attractive. I suppose thats a big advantage.

I didn't enjoy the job but I'm glad I got the experience there. Overall, it depends on the team you are on and the senior managers on the team. Even though I didn't like working there I knew people who did. So, its up to you really.

If you are stuck in a dead end job, I'd take the job with State Street. It will open more doors to other opportunities and thats what its all about.

    Hi,

I'm just wondering if you were offered the job as I am interested in applying for the Graduate Programme in State Street but have heard mixed reviews.

    Hi Twitpants,

Many thanks for your information. I just got an interview from them with a role as Financial Reporting Analyst. Main responsibility would be reviewing FS. I got some picture from someone else as well that SS is not the ideal place to work for but as you said it depends on different departments so can you let me know what kind of image over there in Financial Reporting Team?

    Thanks a lot.

Hey there, it was yesterday and I think it went pretty well. They said I probably need to wait a week or two to get the result. Mine is with IFS Dublin and I think it really depends. The global talent acquisition is fairly slow tbh.
