Counselling vs Clinical Psychology

    Hi,

I am 35 and have a Psychology degree. For the past few years I have been thinking about pursuing a career in counselling psychology. I currently work in a related area (although not working in a therapy role). I am considering the Doctorate in TCD but am quite worried about the employment prospects afterwards. I'm also wondering about Clinical Psychology. Basically if I could choose, I would go for the counselling route due to the fact that I already have some relevant experience and I am not attracted to the very competitive vibe the Clin Psych courses seem to have, both to gain entry and on the course. At the same time there seems to be more job prospects with this route. Are there many mature students on Clin Psy courses and is there an age that is too late for this career?

Quite a few people seem to use the D Couns Psych as a route into Clin Psych. I don't know the age profile of people beginning the Clin Psych, they seem to be late 20s early 30s qualifying, but that's only the ones I come across.
