Refund on a ring?

    Hi all,

OH and I bought an engagement ring in a shop on Saturday. I left it with them to get it resized and picked it up in a mad hurry this afternoon (was on lunch break). Had a really good look at it after work and there are a few problems with it... the size is not correct (too loose), the resizing has made the white gold completely tarnished and dull, and there seems to be a slight dint in the side (again maybe from resizing?).

I want to return it tomorrow for a refund as I'm really not happy with it. It's not the same as the ring we paid for on Sat. Are they likely to give a refund considering they resized it for us? Am I covered by legislation on this?

Thanks for any suggestions. I'm so worried. What if they refuse to take it back??

I think they're more likely to fix all of the above issues rather than give a refund.

Hi. I'd say they will be reluctant to give a full refund, probably an exchange. Try this site though if you want more info - http://www.consumerhelp.ie.

Jewellers are more likely to offer to fix the problem, which is legally permissible under the refund/repair/replacement headings of consumer law. This is partly because of the risk of swapping stones, like changing a diamond of a certain clarity for an inferior one. White gold can be redipped easily, its one of the things that will have to be done every couple of years anyway. If its too loose, again that can be taken care of.

not exactly big issues for them to sort either. a quick resize, and repair of the dent and then a rhodium dip.

Easy to sort these issues out. I very much doubt they will refund you and they don't have to anyway under consumer law.

We had similar issues with our engagement ring (except it was more a case of me changing my mind about it than them damaging it or anything). We had had an extra stone put in it and everything but they were still happy for us to 'swop' it for a different ring in the same shop...and we ended up buying a more expensive one anyway in the end...

If it's a major jewellers there shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks all. Had an absolutely awful experience trying to talk to the jeweller about the problems with the ring; long story short they got super defensive and just shouted in my face until I cried, they continued shouting at me and I left the shop without resolution. My fiancee sorted it out later on and we got a full refund along with gushing apologies from all staff in the end. Very stressful and won't be shopping in antique jewellery shops again!
