    just a thought, there is quite a lot of philosophy on the religion(exam) course, is it really necessary as a separate subject?

    Having spoken to professors, and looked over the Religion syllabus, I don't think that's the case. Also, they're two very different things.

    It is totally up to the teacher. I don't think there's very much on the actual syllabus, but any clever teacher would know that a philosophical discussion surrounding most issues in religion provides a good background for essays in the exam.

    But that's not why a philosophy subject would be introduced — to discuss the "meaning of life" or whatever — but instead to encourage logic and argument formation. The kind of transferrable skills that philosophy is famous for, and that's why I think it would be brilliant to offer it at Leaving Cert. level.

    I signed the petition a few weeks ago.
