Nope its not an early April fools joke, time shift BBC channels were presumed to be hugely unlikely as the operating costs can not be recouped however Auntie seems to be willing to go for this on the grounds of numbers. In the UK iplayer is the de-facto BBC catch up platform presumably this will see less traffic from now on.

BBC Director General Tony Hall announced today that Britain's most-watched channel will launch a BBC One +1 channel.

Speaking today, he said: “Any plan for channels starts with BBC One. Above all, BBC One needs to be on top form. It has to be the nation’s favourite channel, but also its bravest. We’ll also look to launch a BBC One +1 channel, too – it’s what audiences expect, especially younger ones, and it means people can get more of what they’ve already paid for.”

Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, adds: "This is brilliant news for BBC One viewers, it means the content we pay for delivers even more value for audiences. In a world of increased choice, +1 will enable licence fee payers to have even more access to our broad range of programmes every day."

There is no reason for the BBC to do this. None

Hardly a bad thing plus I'd say it costs very little to run. Might come in handy the odd time.

They could've been *really* brave and make it a HD +1.

Demand from the public. I would find it very handy to have BBC 1+ 1. It would be useful when planning an evenings schedule to be able to time shift BBC programmes.

I am sure a lot of the UK would have the BBC iPlayer for that. I use it myself. It is a fantastic service. Also with PVR's people can timeshift quite easily.

What might have been a better bet is a "best of the week" channel a la 4seven only in HD taking programmes from all BBC channels.

    Absolutely.

They tend not to repeat much, crazy in this multi-channel age, so that would've been ideal.

The BBC served up more than 60 per cent of repeats on its channels in 2011.

A lot of top drama programmes do not get repeats - and if I miss an episode I don't watch the rest of a series.

BTW do extended editions of comedy programmes count as repeats?

I suppose they probably repeat the populist stuff (negating even more the need for the main channel to have a plus 1) but many quality programmes get missed out.

When they say BBC 1+1 which BBC1 do they mean?

There are hundreds of versions of BBC1 (a bit of exageration) on the satelite version. For Freeview, just the local version, but BBC 1 HD goes into amnesia mode while local versions go into local mode as in local news spots in the 6 O'C News.

Freesat should get a bit of a makeover now that both BBC 1 and BBC 2 are in full time HD, as is CH4 and ITV 1. Surely, they can get that MHEG 5 thingy to switch channels when the opt outs are used. When they had all those extra channels for the olympics, the unit selected the HD version if you could receive it, and the SD version if you could not. Could that not be made work for the normal channels?

There are 18 versions plus 4 HD channels
