just a quick question on this. this is my first car with the electric handbrake(2012 passat). if im on a slope the handbrake will go off itself but if im on level ground it prompts me to release the handbrake. does it not go off itself all the time unless you take it off yourself. basically the question is when im on flat ground, do i have to release the button manually??

Normally you shouldn't have to. When you go to move off it should release automatically.

However I've noticed on mine, if I don't have my seat belt on I need to operate the handbrake manually, not sure why but I can live with that.

It should release when you move off, no matter what the incline, unless you seat belt is off, then you need to do it manually.

i seem to find that if im on flat ground it wont release itself. maybe im just not totally used to using it. i forgot about the seatbelt thing aswell..

The logic steps the car takes are:

    Drivers seatbelt on

    Engine must be running

    Car in gear

Clutch must be pressed all the way to the floor before letting it out

throttle must be pressed slightly while clutch is being released

What I suspect is happening is that you are not pressing the throttle when setting off on the flat so the car doesn't release the brake Where as on the hill you are pressing the throttle more. Hope this helps:)

Give it time, it's actually a great system and the hill hold assist is pure genius.

If it's a 2012 Passat, it should have the Auto Hold button next to the Handbrake.

Use this - saves any messing with the handbrake button. Just engage the Auto Hold system (yellow light on) and the "handbrake" will automatically come on when you come to a complete halt, and go off when you drive off.

Usually, when you take your seat belt off or kill the engine, the actual Handbrake will engage, but double check it before getting out of the car.

I hate automatic handbrakes. I've got a great big Isambard Kingdom Brunel-style iron bar for operating mine, and that's the way I likes it!

it does, must try this. only have the car a few days and still trying to get totally used to it but that sounds very simple. the manual is very good for the car so tend to look through it as much as i can. cheers.

OP, have you the auto hold button on or off? Using the auto hold will mean that once the car is stationery the electronic brake will engage no matter if you are on an incline or not. It should release again when you release the clutch and put your foot on the accelerator to move. Sounds to me like you are only using the electronic brake button where you have to disengage it every time you want to move off. With the auto hold function the only time you need to use the regular electronic brake button again is when you are moving off for the first time.

Not a big fan of the electronic handbrake but the auto hold function is very handy all the same.

Everything you want to know should be in the attachment....I think it states somewhere there as well that you can release the parking brake without using the accelerator/clutch combination by pressing the parking brake button while pressing the foot brake pedal with ignition on. John
