Where to sell antique/vintage jewellry

I’m not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I have some antique and vintage jewellery I am looking to sell. It belonged to a great aunt and my father was left the contents in her will. The main items would be two diamond engagement rings and a large gold cross on a chain. The engagement rings are about 50-60 years old, the cross more like 100-120. I got them valued in a jewellers and he said they were quite valuable. Now I know I wouldn’t get anything close to his valuation if I were to sell them, but I am wary of being ripped off too.

Can anyone recommend somewhere trustworthy that I can bring them to sell? I am in Cork, but wouldn’t mind travelling if it gave me peace of mind.

    O’Reilly’s Auction Rooms,
    126, Francis Street, Dublin.8.

    Tel: (01) 453 0311
    Email: info@oreillysfineart.com

    or

    John Weldon Auctioneers,
Unit 2, Cows Lane, Temple Bar, Dublin 8

    Tel: (01) 635 1114
    email: JohnWeldon@email.com

Both these auctioneers run regular sales of jewellery and would probably be worth contacting. :)

what about a stall at Mother Jones Flea Market if you're in Cork?

We usually sell customers to Weldons as they do specialist jewellery auctions. Several have come back to us saying that they were happy with how they were treated.

The auctioneer should be able to give you an estimate of roughly how much you should realise at auction. The prices can go much higher or much lower than the estimates depending on who is at the auction or how many people are there.

With auctions just bear in mind you pay a 20% commission on the hammer, and you may want to set reserves (minimum that they will sell for less the 20% commission) if there are any pieces you want to get a particular price for.
