Recognition of online courses

    Hi all,
    Just wondering what your experiences have been regarding recognition of free online courses you have completed by employers? I'm thinking of starting some Computer Science and Programming courses through Coursera, edX etc. Now I know these courses don't fit in to the NFQ, and I'm not going to get a 'proper' qualification for free. But are these courses well regarded by employers, say along side a related level 6/7/8 qualification from an Irish/UK institution? It seems to me they should be, so long as the employer realises that the courses do seem to be to a very high standard. I reckon with programming jobs you will be expected to prove your abilities and not just rely on your CV anyway. Anybody had good/bad experiences in this area?

    I'm considering the same thing, but I think University of the People is a better option than a MOOC (massive open online course), as there's an accredited B.Sc. degree at the end. And they have a course in Computer Science.
