Though this is outside the area of recruitment. I think it would be nice to have a poll based on everyone's area of interest in the service. Also maybe share their reasons for their area.

I voted but can't see the results !

If am lucky enough to get that far, I'd personally love Compol or Roads Policing, nothing like getting paid to enjoy my favourite hobby, motorbikes!

    What about you?

Strangely enough, I like the thought of weekend policing, I don't drink which is the funny part. I like the fact of policing a town center for the fact of how busy it can be. A real challenge.

Not sure if it's a good thing or not that no one is interested in riot policing. I guess being set on fire and bricks thrown at isn't anyone's idea of fun :D

CID or Road policing has never interested me. The other areas I would be interested in.

Though when you said area, I thought you meant what area of NI people wanted to work in.

Probably easier asking people where they didn't want to end up. :D

Two choice, go east and get your car bombed. Or go west and have to deal with riots every bloody week.

If I was successful, after the 2 years probation in response, I'd love to go into HMSU, which is the PSNI equivalent of swat, but I would like to end up in serious crime, or organised crime units within CID, really hope the NCA get powers here lol, means they could recruit here too, which would be pretty awesome

Call me strange but I've always thought that I would love to go in to riot policing! Getting right down into the thick of it, blood pumping, adrenaline flowing, senses going crazy... I can't even really describe why that appeals to me but just watching footage on the news I can't help but think how much I would love to be one of those officers.

On the other hand I would also absultely love to be a dog handler too, but I know there's probably a lot more chance of getting into riot policing than dog handling in Northern Ireland

Chances are you will be involved in Riot policing if you want to be, that's regardless of whether you join the TSG or not :P

And as for dog handling, i've heard its quicker finding a hen with teeth, than getting into the dog unit :pac:

I can understand your appeal. I'd be fun for a while but for me, with the current climate, day in day out having to attend civil discourse for hours at end has got to be tiring.

If your highly interested in the PSNIs approach to riots, watch this:

Can I ask what the attraction is to road policing? Think I would get bored of people asking if i've nothing better to be doing!

On a serious note I'd take a brick to the skull any day over knocking on peoples doors to tell them their partner/child isn't coming home.

I've been out with the road enforcement division (Even went 120 mph - 200 kph on the highway) I'd have to say, some people are car buffs and just like being out on the road. Though it didn't really interest me, I see road policing as highly important. Our roads are the vains of the nation, road officers keep them vains clean. Not just to mention, a lot of bombs are placed on roads now, making road policing highly important.

Dream role would be police dog handler, but I realise that the chances would be very slim.

I would want to go to TSG for a while, but maybe not a whole career.

I would be keen on a counter terrorism specialism, but don't know what roles within PSNI there are (obviously it is a big part of all officers role in PSNI)

I would be interested in fraud or CID or drugs also.

Would fancy a little time at roads but really that would be to complete the motorcycle and at driving courses.

Bottom line is I just want to get my foot in the door, after the two years probation I'm sure there are more roles than we could even imagine to move into.

Seen that before, absolutely love it... and not just to see Nolan uncomfortable :p I understand that its probably one of the most directly dangerous roles in the PSNI, and for that reason most people would think you'd have to be crazy to want to do it, but I just can't help it! It makes no sense to be either why I would want to, but it's always appealed to me since I first got properly into the idea of joining the police.

Wouldn't also mind roads either. I love any excuse to drive, I love my cars, so it wouldn't be a bad way to spend the day for me. But more than anything I absolutely detest any sort of aggressive drivers, reckless drivers, drink or drugs drivers, anything like that. Hate how some people just think it's ok to do so. So to catch them and get some off the road and penalised would make my day and give me one hell of a sense of achievement.

A friend of mines neice got into the PSNI a number of years ago, but quit a few weeks before finishing training. She was going through this riot training when she became scared after being "attached" by rioters during training.

That video is a great insight, but when there are no cameras about they step it up a few gears.

I guess the myth of never damaging your car is just that, a myth.

Over in england, you hit your car once and you have a ton of explaining to do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,262 ✭✭✭DesertCreat_15

That would be justified in the UK too, the drivers erratic maneuvering is a great risk to public safety, either physically T-pac the car or call the pursuit off.

Anyone interested in the area of CID work and more importantly human trafficking might be interested to read this report on global slavery. It outlines the UK and Ireland's slavery problems and provides some insight into one aspect of organized crime.

Also a doc on how the IRA keeps its operations funded for anyone with general interest

The first thing i thought when the reporter went up to that lad selling the diesel in Belfast and asking questions is, does she not realise she could have just blown a surveillance operation or investigation?

Where is the "Drink Tea and Talk Nonsene" role? :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 275 ✭✭PSNI2013

I believe that is known over in England as a community support officer :D

Just a fact I stumbled across. There are currently 59 police officers in the armed response unit. must be very competitive!

Well of course you are not going to have many armed response officers when most officers already have sub-machine guns and rifles.

do most officers have these? Thought it was just a glock that most carried?

Most do carry glock's yes, but a lot are trained in the use of "assault" firearms, such as the MP5. In my area at least most officers patrol the streets with assault rifles and they aren't armed response.

Ah right. I've no idea about firearms tbh. I'll be happy enough with just a glock lol

Oh trust me, when you have someone taking pot shots at you. You'll want all the fire power you can get.

As far as I'm aware, the MP5/MP5k has been phased out and it's now the G36s that DMSUs or ARV units usually carry.

With attacks happening in open ground outside, it would only be wise to use the G36. MP5s are great, but only for indoors.

I doubt there are that many incidents where a police officer discharges their ppw

In 2010 they had "35 bomb attacks, 25 gun attacks" Now these numbers are increasing as violence becomes more prone. Most officers wont discharge their weapon this year, but for those who do. We are not talking about some random kid shooting, this is organized paramilitary attacks. For some officers, how they handle their weapon could mean their life. Sure only a few months ago a police officer was shot at in his home, he only survived because he had his weapon available and could return fire.

(Predictably enough) there's an FOI for that. Worrying amount of accidental discharges lol
