Got an e-mail from Amazon for £20 off a kindle but forgot about it and as it expired last night, would anyone have a valid code that they aren't using? Thanks!

Nice mods on XDA too, think I'll pull the trigger on one of these bad boys.

Just under the £50 free delivery in Uk, so added a "Ambassadors of London Happy Father's Day Chocolate Bar, 100g" to the order (reduced to 2.25 from 4.50) for free delivery and a rotten tooth :)

Great deal, the nooks are lovely devices.

I'm sure plenty of people are aware of this but for anyone that is not, it has been reported that the glowlight screen coating is very easily scratched and once scratched you end up with 'bright spots' that are very visible on the screen.
It doesn't take away from it being a great bargain but you may just need to be a bit 'extra' careful with it and defintiely get a case for it.

Great price, I paid $120 this time last year for mine.

The screen problem is actually on the inside, the coating which allows the light to come through is extremely easily damaged, so even though there may be no visible damage on the outside, the inner coating can be damaged.

I know they say that screen protectors are a no no, but a bit of googling tells us that it's probably the way to go. A case for when the device is not in use is definitely recommended (but they do bulk it up significantly).

The Nook Simple Touch Glowlight is currently on offer for £49 (GB Pounds) and can do delivery through parcel motel.

I got that backlight issue with two devices, trust me, it doesn't take a hard knock to make it happen. Have a hard cover for it now. The screen itself isn't damaged at all but with the backlight on it shows two small 'leaks' where the screen obviously got a hard tap with something. It's definitely fragile - the light from the top shines down and if the top plastic layer gets a dent it bounces the light up like that. Screen unaffected. A super deal as long as you keep that in mind (and the e-ink screen itself is in perfect order I might add)

I ordered a hard cover and screen protector as have seen photos of damage above, so hopefully all goes well, but thanks for the advice Cydoniac, will just have to mind it !!

Does anyone know if the issue with the Nook Glowlight screen coating getting easily scratched is also an issue with the Kindle Paperwhite? I've tried out a friend's Kindle Paperwhite and I love it and I thought the Glowlight was very similar, but now the Glowlight is more than half the price of the Paperwhite. I'm looking for something for reading books only and I don't need 3G or anything else, just for reading books and the backlight is essential. Has anyone tried out both the Glowlight and Paperwhite, if so I'd appreciate your comparisons. I'm thinking of getting the Nook Glowlight, but I don't want it to be another Zune!

A screen protector and hard cover won't help unfortunately.

It doesn't happen on the Kindle because the backlight technology is different. It also doesn't happen on the newer Glowlight (white one). The reason that model is fragile is because of how the screen is made, there are a row of lights that shine from the top and a plastic layer above the eink that disperses the light evenly. If that plastic layer gets dented the light hits the bump and becomes concentrated, hence the 'tear' appearance. If you have a hard cover you'll help protect it but unfortunately it's just an inherent flaw in design. You barely see a scratch when the light is off so the functionality isn't totally ruined. I have 2 marks but I'm not going to replace it as I use it without the backlight most of the time anyway. I do love the ereader apart from that - feels amazing to hold and screen is absolutely perfect for reading. Just don't drop anything on it. Also don't bother with screen protectors because the nook already has one on.

Actually it does happen on the Kindle. Looking at a paperwhite here right now with it.

Ah, there we go then, seems backlighting on these devices is in it's infancy then.

Does anyone know where I can get the Nook glow light in Dublin? None of the Currys / PC World have them in stock.

I don't think there are any current suppliers in Ireland. Your best bet is to order from a UK store using Parcel Motel. I got mine from Blackwell's. You might want to get a hard case for it too, I got mine Here.

Might be a bit late but I think there's a WHSmith in Arnotts that might have them ?

Thank you Parcel Motel - Happy Christmas !!!

Really like the nook on one level but very disappointed at another. The product is advertised as a 2G unit and yet it appears to have a capacity of 250mb. Am I missing something obvious here?

Most device manufacturers nowadays do this trick. A lot of phones claiming 8GB will only have 5.5G free because of the OS occupying this space. You can expand the memory with a microSD cheaply enough though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,540 ✭✭✭✭Supercell

I stuck a cheap 8gb sd card (about €5 on Amazon) in mine and essentially can store an entire library in it from what I can see, I've literally hundreds of books on it now and have still over 6gb free space.

The os uses up a little of it, but the majority of the free space is held for b&n store books. There's no way I know of to put your own books on to that reserved area.

Anyone have any issues with downloading magazines?
I have a long standing subscription to the New Yorker but I can't seem to access it. Any ideas?

Eh?, just connect via usb and copy over the epubs etc ? When i connect mine there is the sd drive and integrated one in my computer, just copy and paste is all thats needed. Mine is rooted though, not sure if that makes a difference?

don't think you can access B&N from an irish IP, try going in via a proxy maybe?

Tired going by proxy but they go by the Credit Card unfortunately.

Well my Nook arrived, got two actually, one for my sister. Find it really good, no problems so far and would recommend it.

I do try and mind it though to avoid the little spots

    Cheers

I have purchased with my irish visa card a number of times - i was in the north, so my IP was fine.
I just went to my B&N account there to check my settings - i've entered the first 3 lines of my Dublin address and put country as UK and used a real postcode.
It may be that the transaction value is too low to trigger any checks from the card issuers, I'm not sure, but I have purchased several books using this method.

I'd be interested in hearing how you fare out.

    Hi
I had the same query and Keredern gave the following advice which worked perfectly for me last night on the Barnes & Noble UK site:

"Hi, just use Chrome browser & download HOLA from the Chrome apps.

Set it to the UK & Bob's your Uncle!!

Works for me for all my book & accessory purchases!

Here's how my account is set up...

    Billing Information

    Default Visa Account: **********XXXX

    Add/Edit

Jane Doe Deer Stud Ballygobackwards Thurles BT1 1AAUnited Kingdom

    Add/Edit

    Shipping Information

Default Jane Doe PM12345 Parcel Motel1A McKinney Road Mallusk Newtownabbey BT36 4PX United Kingdom "

Actually a friend of mine does something similar and works fine for her too, suppose it just depends on how much you have spent if its worth the risk or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 615 ✭✭✭donalh087

Thanks for the advice guys. Unfortunately the New Yorker is only "available in the U.S and Canada" via Barnes and Noble. Tried the above using Hotspot and Beverly Hills 90210 (my go to fake Zip Code) but they appear to go on the card billing address. Strangely I can download it easily on my iPad. There must be a workaround.

I wrote to the New Yorker and they said it was a Nook problem, I wrote to Barnes and Noble and guess what?

    The fight goes on.

I Got my nook at John Lewis, there was a special on before xmas, and used the Parcel Motel for delivery. I am able to upload ebooks from various sites without any problem. Barnes & N I have found difficukt - not availabe in Ireland - kinda thing, so I go elsewhere

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 615 ✭✭✭donalh087

Just for the record - I got a Nook back around Christmas and I really love it. Cant live without it. Two days ago I had it in my pocket and when I took it out there was an internal crack across the centre and nothing works. I emailed John Lewis and they could not have been nicer. No problem at all - just pop it in the post and they will replace it immediately . Great service.
