ChrUbuntu - USB Mouse not working

    Hi All,

I bought a Acer C7 Chromebook the other day and I "upgraded" :) to Linux (ChrUbuntu). I have one or two issues with the install and I was hoping you could help me figure out what went wrong. Please be kind I am still learning.

The two problems I have may be related. When I boot I am getting a IOMEM error - I will get the full text when I reboot, but the second is that a usb mouse is not recognised. It does work and the USB ports are all ok so this is software issue for sure.

Naturally the internet is full of information but it is all very technical and I don't know where to start.......

    Thanks all

Open a shell and type lsusb. Paste here what it returns.

That doesnt mention a mouse. Looks like its not recognising the mouse. Can you try a different port? Straight after plugging the mouse into the different port run dmesg | tail and paste the output here.

Correct, and that is the strange thing about it!

Mouse is recognised but it does not work - pointer does not move, button presses do nothing.

Is there a way - I am assuming it is command line - to first remove support for mouse/touchpad and then reinstate the support.

    thanks,
    Aga

Hi, I have an Acer C7 with Ubuntu too. At least 3 different mice were recognised immediately.

    2 questions:
    - Was the mouse recognised under ChromeOS?
    - Try a completely different mouse and see if it works.

Maybe your mouse is faulty? Does it operate on batteries?

I can't be helpful, but I am interested in how you find it (aside from the mouse issue)?

I am extremely pleased with it. Probably best value for money computer I ever bought, up there with the HP Proliant Microserver.

A bit of a background story, but at least you can check if your use-case is the same as mine:

For a couple of years now, I tend to like the small screen laptops but not too small. I am also not willing to put much money into a laptop.
I use them on the coffee table as a second screen and as a travel laptop. All other gaming and computing is done on a desktop.

The netbook revolution passed me by, as Intel dictated no screens with a resolution higher than 1024x768. Old IBM Thinkpads and 2nd hand Dell X1's did the trick.
Before the Acer C7 I used to have a Samsung NC20. (300euro) That is a bit of a strange laptop. Via Nano processor, 1200x800 resolution. 11"
This was 4 years ago. That laptop could not play HD and was too slow for most games, even the casual ones.

When I bought the Acer C7 in the States, for 170 euro, I did not expect much. But it surpassed all my expectations.
It plays Portal and Portal2 (on low settings) and most Steam Linux games.
It is portable, has a big hard disk (320Gb). It plays all HD movies effortlessly.
It has HDMI and VGA output. And you can replace the mechanical disk with an SSD if you like.
Skype, NX, sound, wireless, it all works. Chrubuntu puts Unity on it but the later versions also allow other distributions, I use XFCE.

The battery life is around 3 hours with wifi on. (enough for me, but if not, there is a 9 cell battery available).
The screen is ok, it is not the brightest or sharpest. I like the keyboard (but this is personal)

    Bad points:
The semi-locked UEFI BIOS is a bit of a pain. It is impossible to get rid completely of ChromeOS.
Probably the worsed part is the trackpad which sometimes is unresponsive.
Also, you will have to get used to using 2 finger tapping for right mouse click if you have no mouse attached.

There is now an Acer C720 based on Haswell, that should make most games play even better.

All in all, big thumbs up if you are looking for a netbook/small laptop done cheaply and right.

Personally, I never used my tablet again since I got this laptop as it does the couch surfing plus the keyboard stuff.

Nice one, thanks. :) That C720 looks very appetising alright.
