What Social Welfare Payments Are Excluded When Assessing Postgraduate Grant

    Hi all,

I got confirmation from SUSI today that I would be getting a €2,000 contribution towards my Postgraduate fees, however, despite my calculations prior to applying it turns out I am €455.80 over the threshold to receive the full contribution.

I am dependent on a parent who is a recipient of Family Income Supplement and One Parent Family payments, and the official sites say the below:

However, SUSI have taken into account the One Parent Family payment when calculating the total income despite it being included on the official list of standard exclusions, as seen below:

So I'm just wondering if they may have made a mis-calculation or mistake when assessing the income or am I missing something obvious?

Thank you for any help it would be much appreciated.

I'm pretty sure that the one parent payment is not counted in means test if you're the person who is the parent and receiving the payment but when it's your parent that's receiving it then it is counted in the means test.

Damn, that makes sense. So near but yet so far. :(

Looking over the documents I'm pretty sure they have not taken into account the fact my parent lost around €30 for me from around May time on their one parent payment so if/when it gets reviewed and that gets reflected I should qualify.

I may not be dead and buried just yet!

I just looked up SI 159 that seems to be correct

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I'm in the same boat as yourself OP. I know for a fact the household earnings are under the 22k but letter said I'm only entitled to 2000. Sending off the appeal form tomorrow. Let me know how you get on, with regards time and that.

Frankie, just to update on this.

I sent my appeal away the week of the 7th of October. I received word from SUSI that they considered my appeal to be successful and were re-assessing my application on the week of the 4th of November. Today I received a letter stating the good news that I would be receiving full fees.

Total turnaround between applying for appeal and final confirmation - 5 weeks.

I hope you get good news too.
