I'm getting married next year and I'm just wondering what's the 'going rate' to give the priest?

Did they tell you if there is a charge for the church etc? Often if they don't take payment they have a "recommended donation amount".

What are you paying the organist? Don't forget that the priest doesn't just show up on the day but in all likelihood prepares your pre-nup papers and runs the rehearsal

There's usually no set amount. I agree with neemish. We gave our priest E100. The organist we had to pay E100 as we did the cantor. You may also have to give the sacristan something too. The organist, cantor and sacristan were all set fees from our church. We had to pay the sacristan E50, and the man couldn't even be arsed to heat the bloody church!

there is no set fee for the church we are using so we are giving the sacristan 50 euro and the priest 150 euro.

    We gave our priest €250.

We are planning to give 200 euro as we heard from some of our friends who have just recently married that that was the norm.

Do priests not vow to live in poverty? Why do you give them money?

As a 'Thank You' for preparing the couple for marriage and marrying them? Did you expect the priest to do all that for free??

Never ceases to amaze me. People will spend 000's on the right dress, suits, cars, flowers, favours and all the trimmings. But will start squawking when they see the costs for the building used for the wedding and the costs/contributions for the people making it happen!
