Wireless internet speed in library

Does anyone else find the wireless internet (WaveLAN or Eduroam) gets very slow when the library is busy?

Would it be faster if I used a wired connection? I have a Macbook so just wondering if it's worth buying an ethernet adaptor.

It would be vastly faster using a wired connection. One of the reasons the wi-fi is so slow is people sitting at locations where there are enthernet ports provided but who are not using them because they couldn't be bothered buying a network cable.

I always use wired in the library. Between every mobile, iPad and laptop I never get a connection. Only thing that annoys me is when some a$$ abandons their laptop to have it charge. Some day I'm going to disconnect them and stack them on a shelf.

Do you need to register your mac address with IT services to use wired?

Hmm, can't recall, but I do remember that there was some message when I first plugged in about my ID number, so it may be done online rather than going to the IT offices.

I did it once. I'm pretty sure its like eduroam, you enter your Student No. and password. Then again, it could have just worked.

The main issue is if people have their iPhones, phones, iPads etc on the network even if they are not using them. Takes up slots of the wireless AP and absolutely kills the speed.

I just connected this morning, it asked for a login and requests to add your mac. It was activated within 10 mins and this was before 8.30.

Last time i looked into it you need to go to IT services.
