Hi there I was wondering if anyone could recommend the best low light lense for a canon 1000d. This is only for photographs at weddings etc, nothing too serious or professional so a reasonably middle of the road camera would be great, I don't want the best but also don't want the worst!

    Thanks in advance

    Lens or Camera?

Lens look at Sigma, they have wide angle ƒ1.4 in 28 and 35mm that are good value and sharper than Canon's L offerings. Their 70~200 ƒ2.8 is also a cracker and very competitive to Canon's offering.

For low light work look for a fast lens (one with a large aperture) ƒ1.8 would be good but ƒ1.4 would be better. After that it depends on how close you will be to the subject.

For a good general purpose lens on a 1000d you would be looking at a focal length of around 35mm, wide angle for use in confined spaces would be around 17 or 18mm. If you are likely to be some distance away you need a longer focal length, but large aperture telephoto lenses get horrendously expensive very quickly.

As above check out the Sigma 30mm ƒ1.4 or alternatively the Canon 28mm ƒ1.8. There is also a Canon 24mm ƒ2.8 which might be just a bit slow for your purposes, or a Canon 50mm can be had for less than €100 in the ƒ1.8 version, or around €350 for the ƒ1.4. 50mm is a pretty good focal length for portrait shots on a crop sensor camera like the 1000d, but may not be wide enough for group shots in confined spaces.

Zoom lenses tend to be limited to ƒ2.8 or slower and even then are quite expensive, so it you can live with a fixed focal length you will get significantly better performance in a low light situation.

I think I would probably go for the Sigma 30mm ƒ1.4 myself.
