Was wondering why there was an increase in Speed vans on the way to work, apparently its "Road Safety Week".

Also with the meeting coming up and this being in operation, people should be careful

Road safety chiefs are getting disheartened apparently - over the road deaths for this year moving in the wrong direction - RTE news this evening.

Personally I think the game would move on 200 percent if you actually addressed the issue of overall driver attitude towards responsible and safe driving.

Which imo - doesn't mean saying - we will stick to the speed limit - and "it will be grand".

My take on it is that it shouldn't matter what numbers of Gardaí are out on the roads - or how many speed cameras are there - driver attitudes need to be right for the job of driving.

Having a road safety week isn't floating my boat - it should be good promotion all year round on genuine road safety issues.

Things like anticipating other road users and dangers ahead, driving in line with road conditions, safe overtaking and lots more issues.

And yes the Gardaí do have resources issues at the moment - but we could adopt a plan to deal with this - more unmarked cars - and I don't mean cars that can clearly be identified as garda cars from 50 yards away inspite of being unmarked .

No I mean cars that look like normal cars to idiots on the road - with they only realising that the BMW they passed out dangerously was a garda car - when the garda driving it is giving them a nice bollocking - and showing the video footage of the dangerous overtake.

Seen a nice new 3 series touring - the new model - 131 plate yesterday - just thinking now - that car would make a nice unmarked :D.

RSA has be taking credit for reducing deaths on the roads while better roads new motorways and dual carriageways where the biggest factor.

All the low hanging fruit has been taken now all that is left is very hard won results.

Speeding van fines and penality points are only a fraction of the problem.

Human error is the biggest factor in fatal accidents. Most commonly on country b road's.

Speed vans penalty points extra garda won't fix the problem when the issue is bad road layout.

A very big factor on reduced deaths has also been safer cars. You're much better off having a collision with a tree in a '13 520D than in a '98 Micra which would have been a fairly common car 15 years ago.

Should people not be careful regardless?
