Brought the Volvo in this morning to have the heated seats sorted out and noticed that number one there is almost no "push" from the turbo when you floor it in any gear above 2nd, it builds speed but feels like its a 1.9 straight diesel.
The second thing I've noticed is that there is a strange rattling noise coming from the engine when I'm accelerating.
The car was serviced last week and I asked them to check out the EGR which turned out to be ok and all filters and oil were replaced.
The car is quite smokey also (black), from previous experience this would point for me to a turbo hose puncture but there are no leaks on the hoses so I'm at a loss.
Could it be that the turbo is starting to fail and the rattling could be the bearings inside the turbo starting to fail?

Take off the pipe on the turbo and have a look at the vanes and try wiggle it see if theres any playif you're worried about it

Good idea, the vanes should turn freely also correct? Or is there going to be minimal contact between the vanes and the vane housing?
I would have also thought that the turbo would spew out blue-ish smoke rather than pitch black

Well the blades should have no damage and the shaft should spin very freely with no wiggle or off axis movement or no forwards or backwards movement.

I'll give it a check when the car is back... if the turbo is knackered then I don't know if there will be any point selling as I'd get probably sweet f all for it :(

From what I saw, the turbo looks like its about to go :( lot of sludge around the vanes and scratch marks on the housing :(

I got a turbo reconditioned it was totally rebuilt and came back like new. I think the typical price is about 350 to 400 euro depending on type.
Of course it has to be fitted and youll need new gaskets and have to clean out pipes and intercooler.

Not good news but it may be better to repair as few buy cars with known issues unless its very very cheap.

Yeah I'll be going down the recon route, just pisses me right off this. Cant stand unforeseen expenses!
