    Hi all,

I have a 2011 Grand Megane and thankfully have had no problems so far. Car is now due it's second service with 62k on the clock. Keary's in Cork are quoting me €290 for a standard service. Is it just me or does this seem really high? I can remember paying around €160 last year.
Car came with three years warranty once the services are carried out with Renault dealer but would I be right in thinking they are trying to get a bit of extra cash out of me?

It seems expensive, but is it the cars seconds service ? It may include an air and fuel filter but it's hard to say without knowing the details.

60k service on a megane 1.5dci was invoiced to my company for my car at about 400 euro here.
filters and oil. filters weren't hugely expensive. I can't find the invoice.
based on the invoice it appears to have been a relatively small service.
high servicing costs take the shine off what has been a very reliable car.
at least the services are only every 30k miles.
got no sympathy from my co-worker beside me who was invoiced even more because his skoda used expensive oil.

Pretty typical for a main dealer second service which may include additional items air/pollen filters. I think you are right to try and keep it main dealer while under warranty, phone a few other dealers to try and negotiate a better price.

What is the service breakdown? Are we just talking oil and filters here? I paid €174 for a service on a Jaguar there last week or so, and I did the Xsara myself on Saturday for a total outlay of €43. Someone is taking the piss, methinks.

Mine has been through 3 or 4, all cheap apart from the 'major' one and even that was no more expensive than what I've paid on other cars.

Hi I also have a grand megane it also due its second service and they quoted me the same price and said it was because of filters as in pollen etc it is expensive though. If you found a better price let me know please .
Also the service intervals are 30,000 km on the cars computer but the garage was saying 20,000 km

Your fuel filter will need to be done, if it's the same one that goes into a fluence, I bought one from a Renault dealer and it was €70

Brake fluid might need doing also and be priced in. Its around 150 for the basic service and 250-300 for the 2nd service. Thats been the going rate since the year dot. Personally I would do it myself and save a bit and more importantly save time bringing the car there and back but they have their goodwill, shiny facilities and their capital and staff need to be paid for. A good independent may be a better bet if you arent handy. The problem with a back street mechanic is they might not do the job properly /use the wrong oil/ not fit parts.
Theres a few good very great Indis on boards like George Dalton where you wont go wrong. I know in Cork that Autowerks are very reputable.

I hav 5k to go for 60.000km and have stood back and looked at it I had a volvo v40 and serviced it my self and this was every 16000km and including filters it would cost approx 90euro for a service and possibly plugs every second service .
Then 250 for a service at 60000km with a car that has run without missing a beat is not too bad .

I have a 2007 Megane and have received goodwill cost to repair window regulator from Renault Ire because the car had a full service history. This saved me 400 per window.

250 is about right for the second service and I think would be worth it down the road. These cars tend not to give trouble if serviced correctly so if getting a local mechanic to work on it make sure he uses correct grade oil and follows the service requirements to the tee.

OP I don't think the service cost is unreasonable. Your Megane has a DPF and so needs the more expensive low ash oil. As a result of this you also have the longer service intervals. Most other manufacturers have much shorter intervals (eg - Toyota, Opel and Nissan). And yes at 60k you'll be looking at a fuel filter and an air filter if its manky. Cabin filter will be recommended too but you could decline. You may also need brake pads at that mileage too. But think what a good deal you got on the car in 2011 and the price of them now! Definitely worth haggling on the service cost though......

the correct oil wasn't that expensive at my 60k service. the multiple filters weren't that expensive either. it was the labour.
all marques know that they have you for the warranty period or in my case the lease period and charge what they can get away with.

I have a megane coupe, 2010 same engine really just different body style,

paid 185 euro for a full service with all filters changed, including fuel filter < Main garage said this was a must since the new diesel do not work well on dirty fuel !!!

Main garage Renault priced me at 250 euro, shop around any body can do a service just look for some reviews online

If you have a 2010 model, there's the chance you don't have a DPF.

Its the 2010 new model that was realised,

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,833 ✭✭✭✭ThisRegard

I know, but some of the 2010 models don't have DPFs, they came in shortly afterwards though. If you don't have a DPF then that would be a reason for the oil to be cheaper.

DPFs have sod-all to do with oil. The reason oil can be quite expensive for modern diesels is to do with the requirement for high-spec full-synthetics because of heat soak-back from the turbo. Having said that I got 5l of full-synth Castrol GTX 10W-40 there lately for Mrs. Goose's Xsara for €25.

Engines with DPFs require a different grade oil so they have everything to do with engine oil.

Are you referring to the low-SAPS stuff? Anything available on this side of the world labelled as suitable for diesel applications will be low-SAPS.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,833 ✭✭✭✭ThisRegard

Yes, and manufacturers have their specifications for low SAP oils, so in this case a Megane with a DPF is recommended to use a different spec oil for the non-DPF one, which is cheaper, RN0710 vs RN0720 I think.
