What required to become a mechanic in the defence forces . I presume you would receive the same training as regards being a rifleman and just specialize in mechanical end of it ,I would have a mechanical mind as.my grandad was one and would have no problem rebuilding a engine etc .I know it is in the transport corps but could I go in direct for a apprenticeship and or a officer .What subjects would you advise for the leaving cert.Is there Army barracks in particular you would be based in ,Could I serve overseas and in general what would I be working on and what kinde jobs , Also what salary would you get presuming I pass all (I know the army arnt recruiting but have been told there on the lookout for apprentices etc) any info advice welcome thanks :)

Mods feel free to move this as I'm not sure where the military part is

You are correct. The brother in law went into the army and joined an infantry unit in Dublin. He did various courses both military and civilian and also qualified as a driver in the motorised units driving everything from motor bikes to artics and buses.

After various trips abroad driving armoured cars and trucks, he is now qualified I'd say approx 5 years as, a mechanic. At present he is based in the Curragh, and I believe he did his training there and also in some technical college in Dublin.

Just after rereading your post, just to clarify he never went in as an apprentice mechanic, he was trained up after serving over 10 years in various units and getting and doing various courses along the way.
