Online banking problems

Not sure if I'm in the right place to post this so apologies if not! :o

I've been living in Ghana a lot of the time over the last year and have to do online banking from here and also buy the odd item online so it is already delivered when I get home.

Over the last month my debit card has been used for some online purchase from a dodgy looking website. So I had the card cancelled and the bank refunded the amount as it was considered online fraud. About 10 days later the exact same thing happened with mr sudzs card. (it would also have been used by one of us to buy something online on the same laptop) same website and the similar amounts of money which converts more or less to 500 cedis, the local currency.

Then this evening I went to log in to online banking and up comes a page saying my registration number has expired and I must input my name, address, DOB, debit card number, security number etc. I started to fill in name and address but then thought better of going any further. I closed the window and tried to log in to the bank again and I was able to do it as usual in the normal way with no demands for all that info.

I have AVG free version on my laptop. I run Malware bytes and Super antiSpyware whenever I think of it, probably every 2 or 3 weeks. I probably should be doing more to protect myself but don't know what, so would appreciate any advice. Do I have a virus?? :o

My first instinct is to wonder if you typoed the website of the bank, and stumbled on a fraudster - something like www.ultserbank.com.

Thanks for the reply but no, I used a bookmark. Actually I have just discovered that I have some malware. A few weeks ago I was getting really annoying pop up ads, the ones that flash and jigger on the screen! Another one pipes up saying "you have mail" if I move the cursor onto it. So I installed a pop up blocker (Firefox) which got rid of them... or hid them at least.

But then I went offline and clicked on one of the ads and the website it brings you to is ib.Adnxs.com. I googled that and it looks like I have to do a bit of work to get rid of it. So anyway, I'm wondering if that what is causing the problem with the bank details??

OK, I folowed this advice http://malwaretips.com/blogs/ib-adnxs-popup-virus/#malwarebytes and the ads disappeared after I reset Firefox. But went ahead and did all the scans. Nothing showed up other than the usual tracking cookies.

I don't get my internet service from any of the big companies but from a small operation, just a couple of guys run it I think, they buy the data from Vodafone and relay it to me via fixed wireless. Would it be possible for someone providing that service to hack into my banking details when I input them online?? They would have had access to my laptop when they were here sorting out a few problems. The fact that the amount of money taken is the equivalent to 500 cedis (local currency) makes me think it's somewhere in Ghana.

Sudzs, wasn't expecting to see you here. I'll help if I can.

Be cautious mi'lady. Heere be dragons.

From what you have described I would say no, however, a bit of network tomfoolery might redirect you to a malicious website. A small ISP run by a couple of guys might have lax security, which might have been compromised, or one of the guys themselves may be harvesting information. Is it a Ghanaian bank you are using or a Europe-based one? Where possible, make online purchases on a credit card. Most credit card providers employ insurance which means fraudulent activity can be refunded very quickly. Not the case with debit cards.

Will your bank allow you to set up 2 factor authentication? Basically, when you log in, you get sent a text message to your phone with a code which you type in. The result is, even if someone knows all your details, they still cant log in unless they have your phone.

If you ave more questions feel free to PM me.
