Ernie Gallagher has been doing some presentation lately on Radio Nova - "Flashback" this morning and Overnights. Prior to these recent gigs, he was of course with Q102 for over nine years (2004-2013).

I also know that Ernie was with Dublin superpirate Sunshine 101 during the '80s. I first heard him on Century Radio (the original national independent licensed station) in the early '90s. He also was with Wicklow's East Coast Radio during the '90s.

Does anyone have any more information about the previous radio experience of Ernie Gallagher? What other pirates was Ernie with? Where was he between East Coast Radio and Q102?

He used to cook chips for the original Radio Nova.

Thanks for your interest Declan. It's a long time ago so I doubt many will remember. Anyway, started out with Southside Radio in the late 70s (various locations around Bray and Shankill and The Victor Hotel in Dun Laoghaire). Did a bit too on B.L.B. (later Horizon, and now of course East Coast FM) and Sonic in Shankill. Then it was on to the big smoke and Radio City on Capel Street (in a line up that included Colm Hayes and John Kenny). After Sunshine I went to Energy 103 on Leeson Street where, besides presenting, I devised a Sunday show called The biggest Jukebox In Dublin (sound familiar?). Pat Courtenay and Tony McKenzie approved the concept and it enjoyed a long and successful run until the pirates were closed down in the 80s.
Contrary to popular opinion, I never actually made chips at the original Nova, but I was once a presenter there. I did once make a cheese and tomato sandwich (we did long six hour shifts) which I shared with the newsreader. Think his name was Bryan Dobson.
If I think of anything else I'll be straight back.

Thanks very much Ernie. That was very informative. All that is missing is the gaps in your licensed radio experience.

Just a few Declan. Easy 103 in the early 90s, a couple of 'trial' shifts on Today FM, Country 106 and Lite FM. Think that's it really.

Much appreciated Ernie. I'm glad you took my queries in the spirit in which they were meant! It's amazing the amount of well-known names that have been through Easy 103 or Horizon Radio and /or East Coast FM.

Going back to your original post, I am, unfortunately, old enough to remember Southside Radio et al! The one station I had not heard of before was Sonic (from Shankill). Who else was involved and when did it operate?

Has Ernie taken over from Marty Miller? I heard him presenting Thurs & Fri on Marty's slot. Usually when a presenter is covering they say so and the jingle remains the same but the jingle during the show was for Ernie Gallagher not Marty!?!
