How to deal with being a failure and unemployed?

Recently came to the conclusion that the postgrad course I'm doing (PhD) isn't for me. I'm half way through and can leave now with a masters. Which I have decided to do. However, I can't shake the feeling that I'm a failure because I can't go on. Even though its my own decision not to continue...

I'm also facing into being unemployed and on the dole for the first time in my life. I'm terrified of having nothing to do. How do people deal with all the free time?? I live alone too so I'm worried I'll be very isolated.

    Hi OP

First of all, if having a masters qualifies you as being a failure in your view, then in my humble opinion, your view needs some serious adjusting!!!!!
It is fantastic that you have a masters, whatever area it's in. Now, as for having no work in your area, lots of people at the moment are leaving college like you with degrees/masters/PHDs and not being able to find work, so not that it's any consolation but you are not unique in this at all.
For dealing with your free time, you could try something like toast masters, great way to meet new people from what I understand, other than that, meetup.com surely has a group for almost any and every interest you could conceive of.
Also you could try some evening classes/courses if this was something you were interested in.
Hope this helps even a little, and best of luck whatever you decide to do.
    :)

Well done for being brave enough to chuck it in.

I too am a PhD who stopped believing in my research. I stayed with it for 6 years because of self imposed pressure to continue. I remember how proud I was the day I got offered the PhD.

I wish I had been able to finish it but it really wasn't for me. I already had a masters. All my friends had time to travel and get on the employment ladder and are now earning 70,000 - 80,000 +. I am on the bottom of the totem pole. I am afraid to leave my current job because it is so hard to explain a 6 year gap in your cv.

Well done for making the decision good and early.

Work on your low self-esteem? In no way are you a failure. I too am starting out on a PhD, it shouldn't be something you do to postpone having to engage with the job market.
