    Hi,

I'm considering applying to do the online PDE with Hibernia College (there are also several 4 or 5 week blocks of teaching practice incorporated into the course). I would apply for the modern languages PDE (I have a degree in German and French).

I just wondered if anyone here has done this course or knows anyone who has? Any language teachers here who can share anything about their experience of teaching? I'd be also interested to know what the job prospects are like for language teachers (particularly German), if anyone has any info on that.

I don't know anything about the Hibernia dip but I wouldn't be too optimistic about getting work teaching German. Numbers really have dropped over the last 10 years or more with several schools dropping it. You would think with Merkel and Co. having so much influence over us that more students would be taking it and it would be in demand again - Numbers are in fact slowly increasing in our school (even though we have no LC class this year or any in TY we have bigger Junior classes than in recent years) but in schools where it was dropped or the German teachers teaching their other subjects the cuts are making it difficult for German to really take off again. I asked two principals about it at Open Day's for my son last year and that was the answer I got. I was also told that they would both love to now offer Spanish or Chinese but as they are losing teachers the likelihood of hiring teachers for new subjects was slim.

I don't think there are 'jobs' in French as there seems to be no jobs full stop but I know it has been very hard to get French Subs in the last few years so unless there has been a large influx of newly qualified French teachers (quite likely) you'll probably get enough subbing/ maternity leaves to keep you going.

I agree with this. German is not good for employment prospects. French is not too bad. To be honest I'm not sure I would do my dip in French and German if I had my choice again. I have been lucky to have had work but it has been all over the country and fairly short-term. I feel it has affected and limited my private life. Think carefully but on the plus side they are lovely subjects to teach!

Thanks for the replies. It's helpful to get some advice from people working in the industry. I have been reading a lot about the shortage of teaching jobs and want to make an informed decision. I think if I do it I will go to the UK (where I am from originally)

That's really interesting to read. But I keep hearing about the number of students that are increasingly taking up Spanish from newspaper. There must be truth in that? it makes me think about doing the dip (Now the 2 year masters). I just finished up my degree in French and Spanish and I'll be heading off to France to be a language assistant hopefully next year, which will hopefully give me an idea before I make a decision.
