This is my first year at DCU, and in anticipation of the soc days next week, was wondering if anyone knew of any good clubs/societies? I have been looking through the near never ending list, and I have counted at least 10 that I have an interest in. The go karting, rock climbing and mma clubs are meant to be good, but there are other ones such as public speaking and anime that I haven't heard any opinions on. Would be nice to get some imput to let me narrow it down a bit :p

I think its very hard to tell you to join any particular society if your not interested in the area it covers, or would like to try it out. Remember that you can still join societies after clubs and socs day you can always go along to a few events and decide after, depending on if you like the atmosphere.

That is deffo true. I'm doing multimedia so there are alot of societies that I would benefit from going to (media production soc, photosoc, art soc, etc.) But of course I would want to make room for other interests.

It's good to know that you can try before you join. Saw that the rock climbing club were giving people a few free lessons, so will take them up on their offer. I'm just wary of mickey mouse socs that are disorganised. I guess it's a case of trial and error. Thanks for your imput.

Ah, well you didn't mention you did Multimedia.
Thats what studied, and to be honest I found you didn't have to stick to societies associated with your course if you don't want.
I went to media production a few times in first year because at the time they were really struggling to find anyone to do crew, and production jobs, as a lot of the communications and journalism students were only interested in presenting.
I also spent 3 years as the Public Relations Officer for Gamessoc. Pretty much every society has one on the committee, where you make posters, leaflets, maybe run facebook and twitter pages or make videos... Pretty much all the media stuff. Great work experience.

If your interested in more programming or web, Redbrick would be helpful to join, Its mostly Computer Applications students, but you can learn some great skills, and you get web space with your membership, thats pretty useful.

Anyway, maybe try a diverse few societies. Once you finish college you really don't get to try so many different activities, so make the most of it.
