Hi, I am the owner occupier of an apartment and I am renting a room to an EU resident that has moved here to work, he has a job offer but he needs proof of address in order to get his PPS number. What do I need to say in this letter? I am on a jobsbridge scheme and is this letter going to interfere with my social welfare dealings? Anybody ever been asked to do this?

Effect of rental income on social welfare payments

If you are getting a means-tested social assistance payment from the Department of Social Protection, any rental income you get will be assessed as means and may affect your payment. However, rental income will not be assessed as means if you are getting a State Pension (Non-Contributory) or Widow's/Widower's or Surviving Civil Partner’s (Non-Contributory) Pension and you would be living alone unless you rented out a room in your home.

As regards proof of address, just write a letter stating something like,To whom it may concern..... this is to confirm that Mr Joe Soap is currently renting a room from me at the above address and has done so since 00/03/13 and then sign it.

Not sure if this will be accepted though.

You will most likely have to provide a bill in your own name along with the letter. Also if you are on JSA the rental income will have an effect on your payment. The rent will be assessed as means and your rate reduced by the rent amount received.
