Off the road declaration on-line...

It looks like, that motortax.ie website opened a possibility to declare vehicle off the road online.
Must be a new thing, as few days ago I didn't see it.

Unfortunately I can't test it, as all my vehicles are taxed for next few month, so I don't have a PIN number.

Can anyone confirm if it actually works?

Wow, that was quick but you have to have a PIN number?
I can't test it for about 11 more months! !

This'd be the pin from when your renewal came ages ago and now you're paying the back tax and not driving?

I'm due for renewal at the end of the month, so just gave it a go.

    Got as far as:
    274852.JPG

Drop down box gives 3/6/12 month options.

Didn't go any further than this, as I won't be putting it off the road, so no idea what the next steps are and whether there is paperwork to fill out or whether it just goes through on line.

Wonder if it can be used when a new car is registered at the end of the month, but won't be on the road until the following month? Tried it with a Sept reg that hasn't been on the road, and it won't allow it, but if we do it on the date of registration it might. May see at the end of this month.

....guessed that alright - but I didn't keep my 2007 post....... :P :P so SORD'd it the other way.

Handy to be able to do, though.

Would be dead handy to be able to declare car off road for taxed cars too. Would be a bit messy with the paper tax disc but maybe it's a time to get rid of those historic pieces of paper on the screen altogether.

Just tried it out, Tax out the end of the month.

And I can declare if off the road any month from January to October, Not just 3, 6 or 12 month increments.

Yes. You have no choice - as long as it's in your name it has to be either taxed or SORD'd.

Selling it or not is irrelevant.

So you can't declare it off the road from November?

Cinio, I owe you a pint as I would of never noticed this and you've just saved me a trip to the motor tax office. :D

Ah ok, I thought the '3 months notice' sneaked in, but sounds like it's not...

When you go back in now is there any notes or anything to say your card is sord'd? If you go to tax it does it say it?

Sorry probably worded wrong, I can declare off the road from November 1st until Jan/Feb/Mar etc.. up until October 2014.

    That's not true.
If moonship is not going to drive or tax his car ever in the future, he doesn't need to do anything.
Once car is sold, new owner can tax it from begining of month he bought it.

Ah, I see what you did there.

Indeed, if he is going to do nothing other than sell it, you're probably right.

O/T - will this mean we should only buy s/hand cars at the start of a month now so ? :)

True, True, But i wouldnt put it past this government chasing up sellers for back tax at some stage So better be safe than sorry.

If you are going to sell it and its sitting up, then declare it off the road.

Sell it or scrap it... Whatever.
If he is not going to tax it himself ever again, there's no point in declaring it off the road.
O/T - will this mean we should only buy s/hand cars at the start of a month now so ? :)
Only if you are buying untaxed car.
It was always the case anyway - so nothing changed.

With current tax regulations, government is not allowed to chase up sellers which had their car neither taxed or declared off the road before sale.

Obviously regulations might change at some stage, but I don't believe anyone can be chased until they change. And even if they will, law can't work backwards.

Thats what i meant, if i was to sell my car and just had it sitting on my driveway until sold, i could declare it off the road? New owner will only have to pay from the date of purchase?

    Hi All

I have a car with engine problems that I intend selling. It has not been taxed since March 13 and I did not declare it off the road. Where do I stand ?

    Any help appreciated.

You are only liable for tax arrears once you proceed to tax that car.
If you sell it without taxing it, then you are not liable for anything.
New owner will be able to tax it from begining of month in which he bought it.

Thats brilliant. I was hearing all sorts of conflicting stories and did'nt know who to believe. Thanks for your help.

I declared my car off the road 3 months ago and it's expiring by the end of this month. I found the last pin they sent me when the tax was up, I tried to use it wanting to declare my car off road for another half year or so and it didn't work. I'm wondering why aren't they sending new pins when the declaration period is up? I don't have time to go to the tax office this week, quite pi$$ed off here.
