Getting an Audi TT Chipped?

I have a 2001 Audi TT Quattro 225bhp. A mate who used to have one is gunning for me to get it chipped. Says you can get it up to about 255bhp for not a lot of money. I was not that pushed as 30 horses doesn't seem like that much - but he says it makes quite a bit of difference.

Has anyone done this and is there a big difference? Can anyone recommend where to get this done?

I have an S3 of that era so basically the same car/engine/running gear, I got mine mapped over the summer by Joe Power from TDR.ie (he's the only man for the job really, we got 3 S3's mapped that day).

The map makes a world of difference it's like night and day, before getting the map done though make sure your car is mechancally sound - no boost or breather pipe leaks etc and fit an upgraded TIP (Turbo intake pipe) from a reputable company like Forge or Badger a good TIP alone is proven to get you 10/20 bhp, i fitted one months before mapping and the difference in pull after 3/4k is unbeliavable - the factory one is made of a very soft rubber and the collapse when the car is looking for the most air under full boost.

Here's video of the Factory TIP collapsing.

I'll have my mapped S3 at the boards meet next weekend, you are more than welcome to take it for a spin if you are there.

As tossy said, you need to make sure the car is in perfect running order before a chip. Also if your going to spend that money, be sure to fit the best quality air intakes / filters etc that you can.

I also for got to mention that the term 'chip' is a bit outdated now, the proper term is remapp. Chipped comes from the time a tuner would need to remove the standard microchip in the ECU and solder in a new one containing the parameters for the new map, most modern cars can now be mapped via the OBD Port.

Personally i would keep the standard Airbox and fit a goood quality panel filer from a company like ITG (forgot to mention i fitted one of them at the same time as the TIP)

A colleague of mine had a chipped 270bhp Mk1. I think it was AMD copied in UK. Loon of a car. No problems with it apart from turning it into a raving alcoholic. ......

I'm on my 3rd Mk1 - I wouldn't bother Chipping personally. I'd be looking at brakes and suspension. When you can drive a std car 100% flat all the time then I'd look at more power.

What mods did they have done to reach 270?

The brakes and suspension are more important. The car is already very quick but suffers from iffy handling stock as well as iffy looks if pre facelift (2003) unlowered.
You will need some Defcon bushes, Eibach springs, rear camber adjusters to get rid of the terrible wheel splay when lowered, some new track rod ends will help also as will a nice set of wheels to customise the look to your tastes.
Enjoy it, it is one of the nicest cars ever made at any price point. They are laughably cheap these days.

Only commenting on the S3 here but it's one of the better handling stock cars i've driven. Suspension wise it doesn't need much apart from good upkeep, the only bushing i[ve uprated on mine is the dogbone (gearbox) mount, that and the forge short shifter have really tightened up the gear changes.

Brakes i agree totally, the certainly need those.

You should have jumped on the remap group buy. Do not buy a chip for your car.
There's only 2 guys in Dublin I would use and that's joe power or Martin in autoremap.

They both perform the same job in different locations and they share some services too iirc.

this ^^^^ iIndeed, including mine there were 4 on the road in Athenry this am. Got to be getting to worth finding a good one now, before muppetry sets in. There's a beautiful Glacier Blue one with only 37k miles on it FS near me. The seats still have the matt black on them...........lubberly.

As for what the 270 had done - not sure tbh. It was chipped by Wak from here: and came via a guy on the UK tt forum. So, AMD chip, Miltek exhaust, Forge DV, upgraded hoses (Samco ?) and can't remember what he did with induction side. Was lowered, different ARB, shocks, springs, brakes etc. Uncomfortable for normal driving on R roads tbh. But bananas fast.

Mine has grooved and cross drilled disks front and rear and stops faster than it goes, eibachs, rear camber adjusters, reiger body kit, defcons, msw oz wheels, forge short shift with forge gear knob, leather arm rest, alpine boot mounted amplifier, subwoofer , speaker system, bluetooth headunit with usb glovebox lead, cruise control.
Coupled with its standard climate control, esp, xenons, quattro drive system, 6 speed manual gearbox, 20 valve 5 valve per cylinder turbo with two intercoolers, soft black nappa leather , electric roadster roof, aluminium bonnet and many internal fittings like vents and in my case the lovely roll hoops to be honest I am having difficulty in replacing it with anything.
Ive looked at 60k new E class Merc Convertibles and the spec, looks and engines are way lower than the above , probably only a 500SL or a 911 comes close (for me)but they are very different kinds of car with different running costs.
The Coupe is also lovely, they were genuine classic cars the day they were made.

I've emailed tdr.ie twice now via their website and no reply. I find it continually amazing how so many Irish businesses do not respond to people genuinely looking to give them business... Yes I know I can call them but when people are actively looking to spend money they should be responding in hours.

I'll try Autoremap and see how I get on...

Ring Joe on the mobile number on his site. I've never failed to get him on his mobile. Personally Joe is the only guy in this country i'd let map any car of mine, being a bit difficult to get via e mail wouldn't turn me off. (of course i am saying that as a repeat customer)

I'd be more concerned about a guy sitting around all day chatting on email. It would suggest to me he may not be very busy.

I see your point but if you have a contact form on your website and you don't get back to people - that's not a good thing. Some people prefer email to phone for making enquiries. Too busy for more business? Fair play to him - no recession there so!

I'm involved in a few business's myself and we have a lot of online contact inquires. Being from the 'text don't call' generation myself, I can see why emailing or texting is so much easier. However, from a professional standpoint its incredibly annoying sometimes. People email you at 11pm and expect a response on a stock level in 5 mins.

If you assume the total time it takes is about 15 minutes for someone to write and then for the other to reply, a 45 second phone call would probably answer the query. We have to put up notices on our online presence every once in a while to say that calling is faster as we sometimes just do not have the time to reply.

There are things in life that is far better to call and leave a message than email ;)
